Imagine a comic book. The kind with superheroes and punching and stuff. Now imagine that most of those superheroes are kind of total jerks. Add in a lot of profanity. No, more profanity than that. Ok, now throw in felonious owls, spectral bovines, gorilla arms, lots of bears, unplanned pregnancy, and 19th century boxer John L. Sullivan. And then a little more profanity. And be sure to include almost nothing about theology or space exploration.

Now imagine—and this is key—being able to drink all that. And then imagine it’s called Beer Hates Astronauts, because that’s what we’re calling it. And we’re calling it that because it’s the beer version of God Hates Astronauts, which is the actual comic I completely failed to properly evoke above.

This is just the latest step in creator Ryan Browne’s attempt to dominate the world by means of one of the most unsummarizable comics in existence. Having recently Kickstarted the deluxe hardcover edition of God Hates Astronauts with massive success, he has joined forces with Half Acre for a groundbreaking venture in distributing comics in hoppy liquid form.

7% ABV India Pale Ale brewed with Vienna malt and Citra hops.

Sampled at the tap room. Rating from notes. Pours a nice hazed golden orange with a thick white head on top. Lots of citrus, mostly orange and tangerine, upfront in the aroma, with tropical fruit as well as bready notes rounding out the nose. Flavor is flavorful, yet bitter, with a bright citrus and mango tropical fruit bittersweet balanced combined with pine hop bitterness. Some breadiness, but the juicy fruits in the beer tend to win out. Bold body, with a somewhat thick texture. Average carbonation sending me to a lingering bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Bottle courtesy of GatorGuy92. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Nose is malty with huge tropical fruit, grapefruit, and some light caramel. Flavor is similar with tropical fruit, grapefruit, and some light caramel. Tea, huge citrus, and huge tropical fruit hits. Outstanding Citra IPA.

Bottle shared by oline73. Thanks Steve. The beer is moderately hazy and straw yellow. The aroma is fabulous. Dank hops and resin with citrus and tropical fruit. The flavor follows suit. Hop forward with alcohol well masked. Terrific. Highly drinkable. Bonus points for label art. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle (thanks goodbyeohio for sharing... Poured hazy, golden-orange with a moderate head. Awesome hop citrus bomb nose. All that great hop flavor without being too bitter. Citrus and tropical fruits carried the hop flavor from start to finish on this one.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewery, out of the cask with extra citra hops added (Gnarled Winslow) and out of the bottle. This review is of the bottle version. A: Pours a hazy orange color with a one finger height of white head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thicker collar that leaves some sticky sheets of lace down the glass. S: Pure citra hop up front. Some nice grapefruit, lemon and orange flesh character. The Vienna malt comes through with a nice grain bread sweetness. Great balance between the two with the Citra really being showcased. T: Again, the balance between the two is there and it’s really nice. Sweet cereal grain Vienna malt with a nice balance of orange flesh and light grass from the Citra. Mild lemony bitterness in the periphery as well. M: Light bodied with a medium carbonation level. Finish is sweet and citrusy. O: Really nice balance of hops and malt. Simple and clean with a little more emphasis on the Citra which was a nice. Another drink and refreshing IPA from Half Acre, color me surprised. Serving type: bottle 08-31-2013

Cloudy orange pour with a single finger head. Lots of lace and a long citrus aroma. Lingering bitterness and citrus play on each other. Very easy to drink. I liked this a lot. I can see this becoming HA’s standard IPA possibly.

Decent citrus hop aroma with some malt aroma. Very nice orange cloudy glow. Nice balance between citra hops and earthy vienna malt. Good citrus flavor with a malt backbone. Good malty mouthfeel. You don’t get the feeling that you’re drinking a 7%avb. You could drink a fair amount of this and have it suddenly sneak up on you.

Pint pour on tap at the tap room (Chicago, IL). Pours a deeper orange amber hue, well hazed with some healthy glow on the edges and bottom. Frothy offwhite head dies down to a head, sticks around ok and laces ok. Aromas throw big Citra hops, tropical fruit and oranges. Grapefruit, some lemon, and bigger dry florals. Some gentle bready and firmer malt bill. The hops overwhelm, become the driving factor. Bready, a faint toasty feel. Initial is medium bodied, firmer feel with gentle warmth. Bigger Citra hop presence is tropical, citrusy, some good flavors. Grapefruit, mango, and some tropical fruit. Gentle warmth and dryness. Middle is a touch bready, mellow bigger feel. Some warmth, tropical and citrusy hops. The Citra element starts to taper out a bit. Mellow toasty Vienna malt feel at times. Backend is a bit dry and bitter, oranges and tropical fruit. A bit warm and spirit driven at times. Finish is a bit dryzn bready, fruity. Solid. A touch warm, the bitterness trails off a bit. I think this beer has a bit too much ABV for it’s own good. Solid. Nose is quite lovely. Good not great.
