Bottle shared by beerpig317. Poured black color with medium brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy roasted chocolate malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration to long duration. My expectations where exceeded with a good stout.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a smooth bitter chocolate, with beany, light boiled veggies. In mouth, a sweet chocolate, silky smooth, coffee beans, very nice. On tap at Fountainhead, May 21 2011.

Growler… Pours pitch black with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. The aroma is a carbonaceous, sweet marriage of coal and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with a slick mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The flavor is a ribbon of sweet, creamy milk chocolate and bittersweet dark chocolate. Finishes with candied nuts, chocolate and light smoke. Kudos to pantanap for shipping the growler my way!

Bottle. Pours with a black hued body and medium sized tan head with some good retention. Aromas are fudgy, coffee, cola, soil, bready malts and dusty. Flavors are dusty, nutty, fudge and cocoa. Medium to strong sweetness, a touch thinner than I expected. Medium carbonation.

Growler and served in Bells snifter: Deep brown and nearly opaque, some purple and tan highlights, frothy but small tan head with okay lacing. The aroma has notes of bakers chocolate, vanilla beans, burnt coffee, blackstrap molasses, prune, fig lactic acid, walnut and roast, some leathery and tobacco earthy yeast esters. The taste starts a tad sweet and syrupy but a nice dash of lactic acid and acidic fruit help balance before the hop and coffeeish bitterness comes about. Nutty and roasty throughout with an earthy component. Even a touch tannic and woody toward the end. The mouth feel is quite smooth and moderately carbonated, a but thinner than expected but that makes it quite easy to drink. Overall a very successful effort IMO. I am now enjoying glass #3, yummy.

UPDATED: JAN 30, 2011 Growler from the brewery picked up for the Bears game (Chicago, IL). Pours a very dark blackish hue, opaque with touches of brown, a cakey moderate darker brown head, stays moderate sized, laces well. Aromas are rich dark cocoa and roasted malts, touches of brown sugar, molasses, coffee grounds. Chocolate, cream, earthy tobacco, touches of lactose but not big. Kinda like a blend of a lot of cacao, rich and dark, dry roast. The sweetness is there, but it is so much more. Almost like a stout brewed with a Brown Ale appeal. Initial is medium bodied, throwing roast and cocoa, dark cacao nibs, touches of molasses, brown malts, roasted malts, sweeter cocoa and toffee. Touches of biscuits. The beer itself is a little light on body, with dry and roast lingering on, cacao and some sweetness, light lactose, toast and touches of earthy tobacco and brown malts, roasted barley. I think the surprisingly less sweet beer makes it a little thinner on body overall. Really, this feels like a chocolate loaded brown porter to me. Touches of milk sugar, but it really falls behind to me. Roast, dry, cocoa. Touches of coffee grounds work there way in a bit. Not a bad beer, tasty, just a little bit underbodied and not as sweet as you’d expect a sweet stout to be. A great display of cocoa.. The natural way with some light touches of sweetness and plenty of unsweetened dark chocolate, roasty malts, dry and lingering sweetness hangs on a bit. Me thinks this beer has brought out the homer in some of us..

Bomber to snifter (thanks Beerpig317). Looks good; black with beige lacing. Smells solid; dark malt and chocolate with some roast too. Tastes like it smells with More roast and an an average mouthfeel. Not bad.

22oz bottle shared by beerpig317. Pours dark brown to black with a small light beige head. The aroma is heavily roasted, dark chocolate, with mild coffee notes. The flavor presents much more as a dry stout; big roasted malts to the point of being ashy, chocolate is more dark in nature rather than creamy milk chocolate and there is some coffee to the finish. Drying finish. Decent, but could use more sweetness.
