Heyoka is a western charged firecracker. We conjured the classics in Chinook and Amarillo then laid them on a bed of pale malt. This India Pale Ale shoots straight to the bitter edge before falling into a mellow haze. Deep gold, 7% ABV and ready to travel into the distance. The Heyoka resides in the opposite and is said to use the wind as sticks to beat the drum of thunder.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Pours a clear amber orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a great big pine note with a bit of resin and a touch of bread. Flavor has same strong pine note with a hint of grapefruit and resin.

Can. Pours a pale golden-orange, big frothy white head, solid retention, really nice lacing. Nose is tropical fruit, dankness (lotta guava, mango, passion fruit, cat piss).Mouth is medium bodied, dry and fruity hops taste as described in nose, medium bitterness, in addition to the tropical fruit also getting some melon and a soapy note at the back end, bitter finish. Nice IPA boys. Let’s go Rangers!

1/21/2014: Half Acre Heyoka IPA... Awesome IPA with lots of tropical fruit (pineabpple, papaya, apricot) and pine, ample bitterness, sticky pine hops; AMAZING aroma of juicy pineapple, tangerine, and some mango; sadly, this beer is not available in Ohio. 16 fl. oz. can shared by dirhauge. Thanks Paul! Rating #25 for this beer.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2014 Can: Thanks, Tom! Slightly hazy, copper-orange body with a big, chunky, & foamy eggshell cap that sits on top & leaves lots of fat lacing behind. Aroma is notes of bitter, soapy pine needles, floral perfume, brash grapefruit peel, tangerine zest, & very light toasted malt sugars. Taste has more bitter pines, pungent perfume notes, pine... Rose-y flower pedals mid-palate with some sweeter notes of orange flesh & grapefruit pith in the finish. Some light malt sugars in the aftertaste with most of the bitterness hitting up front. Soft bodied, rolling carbonation. Quite a nice, bitter IPA. I prefer Daisy Cutter by a large margin, but this is some good stuff. I was surprised to find that this does not have Centennial hops!

16oz can poured into a plastic cup at Happy Village. The aroma is a hoppy citrus. Pours an orange color with a mostly diminishing white head and substantial lacing. The taste is sweet up front and hoppy on the finish. NICE! Fruity sweetness initially and citrusy on the tale end. Nice balance. Medium-light body and crisp carbonation.

Draft on tap at the Half Acre Taproom (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice deep golden amber hue, a touch darker in the body, gentle darker harvest golden glow, subtle haze is slight overall, still moving towards transparent. Lively carbonation in the body with a cakey head atop, decent layer sticks around ok. Aromas are a touch stale, earthy hops and bready malt meet some mellow fruity hops, touches of lemon, grass, a gentle cattiness. More florals, lemon and earth. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, some sharper swipes of bitter florals, some metallic notes, grass and citrus soils. Some cattiness, pine, and melon. Dry sharp bitter notes are a touch metallic, dry, mellow cereal and bready grains. Middle shows touches of fruit, subtle melon, faint tropical fruit. Some lingering fruit, dry grains. For it’s more girthy ABV, it feels lighter, dry, but still offers some sharpness that seems a bit off. Gentle bready malts, dry grain, florals. Some mellow soapy hops, florals and gentle citrus rind, faint white grape as we start finishing. While the nose eventually settles out, it was a bit stale to start. More fruity as we let it stand. The beer itself is crisper and dry, sharply bitter at times. Hard to manage many 7% ABV IPAs in my time, but it’s a solid offering overall. Preferred Avione though.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a thick and creamy white head...nice lacing and retention. Aroma has notes of orange, grapefruit, and floral/hoppy spice...slight pine accent. Flavor is a nice mix of grapefruit, fresh hoppy spice, and mild pine. The mouthfeel is medium/full and the finish is dry and earthy/resinous...just right. Great beer.

Sampled at STL Hops 6th Anniversary Party - This was one of the highlights of the party. Pours clear yellow/gold with a small white head. The aroma has tropical hops, cattiness, pine and light malt - very hop forward. It has a medium / light body with soft carbonation. The flavor begins with pine, grapefruit, tropical fruit and dry cracker malt. The finish is even fruitier. This is great. Alcohol is very hidden. I was expecting this to be much lower when I pulled it up to enter the rating.
