COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Heyoka is a western charged firecracker. We conjured the classics in Chinook and Amarillo then laid them on a bed of pale malt. This India Pale Ale shoots straight to the bitter edge before falling into a mellow haze. Deep gold, 7% ABV and ready to travel into the distance. The Heyoka resides in the opposite and is said to use the wind as sticks to beat the drum of thunder.

Can. Poured clear golden color with an average to large frothy white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex hop and malt aroma. Medium to full body with slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is another change of pace solid beer.

A lightly hazed golden ipa with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, nice biscuit malt with grassy floral hops, grapefruit notes, catty notes, nice. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt, dry, with good floral hops, grapefruit pulp, bitter fruit, classic ipa with a punch. On tap at brewery.

Can. Honey pour with a feeble white head. The smell is a nice blend of tropical fruits and sweet herbs. Flavor has typicla HA yeast and malt terroir, malts are a bit biscuity. Hop flavor is sharp with an ample bitterness, flavors of light fruit and spices. Its pretty good.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Pours a clear amber orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a great big pine note with a bit of resin and a touch of bread. Flavor has same strong pine note with a hint of grapefruit and resin.

Draft on tap at the Half Acre Taproom (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice deep golden amber hue, a touch darker in the body, gentle darker harvest golden glow, subtle haze is slight overall, still moving towards transparent. Lively carbonation in the body with a cakey head atop, decent layer sticks around ok. Aromas are a touch stale, earthy hops and bready malt meet some mellow fruity hops, touches of lemon, grass, a gentle cattiness. More florals, lemon and earth. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, some sharper swipes of bitter florals, some metallic notes, grass and citrus soils. Some cattiness, pine, and melon. Dry sharp bitter notes are a touch metallic, dry, mellow cereal and bready grains. Middle shows touches of fruit, subtle melon, faint tropical fruit. Some lingering fruit, dry grains. For itís more girthy ABV, it feels lighter, dry, but still offers some sharpness that seems a bit off. Gentle bready malts, dry grain, florals. Some mellow soapy hops, florals and gentle citrus rind, faint white grape as we start finishing. While the nose eventually settles out, it was a bit stale to start. More fruity as we let it stand. The beer itself is crisper and dry, sharply bitter at times. Hard to manage many 7% ABV IPAs in my time, but itís a solid offering overall. Preferred Avione though.

Sampled at STL Hops 6th Anniversary Party - This was one of the highlights of the party. Pours clear yellow/gold with a small white head. The aroma has tropical hops, cattiness, pine and light malt - very hop forward. It has a medium / light body with soft carbonation. The flavor begins with pine, grapefruit, tropical fruit and dry cracker malt. The finish is even fruitier. This is great. Alcohol is very hidden. I was expecting this to be much lower when I pulled it up to enter the rating.

Draft. Pretty solid west coast IPA thatís got an old school hop character. Lots of simcoe here but too much chinook for me tends to get to heavy on resin and herbal, malt base is solid touch toasty and clean throughout. Overall Iíd like to see chinook play a bit less of a role here as it seems the usage attempted to balance simcoe. I think I enjoyed this a little more than others.

on draft at brewery, your standard ipa. A little old school but very nicely pulled off. HEavy sweetness and heavy bitterness.

Draft at Half Acre. Pours a hop hazed gold, sticky white head. Nose is resiny, cannabis, toasted malt and petroleum. Clean otherwise. Low fruity notes as well. Red currant and kiwi. On tasting, big bitterness with some grassy tea like hop notes. Thick resin and low sweetness. Subtle fruit notes. Nice enough beer, but a bit too one dimensional.

16 oz. can. Pours a bright golden color with a nice bright white head on top. Hoppy herbal aroma with mild earthy undertones. Bitterness is only mild, focusing instead on herbal, grassy and floral notes. Mild malt sweetness but mostly an excessive in hop profiles, forgoing bitterness Light, crisp mouthfeel, and indeed it is on the lighter side of mouthfeel for an IPA. Quite clean throughout. This is enjoyable.
