3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 thetomG (246) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 7, 2010
UPDATED: SEP 8, 2010 HMMM....
Dark brown pour with a nice sized brown foamy head that leaves some sticky spotty lacing around the glass. Aroma is mostly a sweet sticky malty blend. Taste is more bold and complex - so much so that I’m really struggling to pick out specific flavors. There’s definitely some sweet malty notes, along with a slight hint of espresso and some mildly piney hoppy aspects, but the flavor really is more of a sum of its parts than it is about any one element shining through. Is it a black IPA or a hoppy dark american ale or a hoppy brown ale? I’m not sure, but it is VERY interesting and not like any beer I’ve had before. On the lighter & smoother side of things and very drinkable.
Will be definitely be enjoying more of this tasty and unique brew.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 pantanap (3200) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 7, 2010
Half acre sticky fat. growler purchased on friday, consumed early saturday.. Pours a stouty porterish dark brownish black
pour with a frothy light beige head... Aroma is a nice blend of roast
and citrusy good hops...Flavors are heavily on the roasty chocolate
front with some citrus hop aspects. Somewhat reminds of a lighter
nightstalker almost resembling goose’s black ipa but smaller in nature. Nice combination of
a roasty stout with some very fresh hops. Body is nice and not too
light or heavy. easily drinkable.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2011 Growler pour from the brewery (Chicago, IL). Pours a near opaque black, dark and ominous with brownish edges. A big frohty light brown head cakes large, big lacing. Head stays large. Aromas are doses of carmelized sugar, cocoa en masse, green earthy hops and rich florals, grass, piney notes. Vanilla, a touch of coffee, roasted barley. A nicely hopped dark ale, fresh and big aromas. Cocoa is sweeter slanted. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, espresso coffee and vanilla, roasty malts and carmelized sugar. Decent roast pairs with big piney and floral hops, bigger bitterness behind sweeter cocoa and roasty carmelized malts. A nice display of fresh hops with a twist of darker malts. Rich and creamy, smoothed and lighter bodied than anticipated. Really interesting, not immersed in huge pine and roast, the malt body is a mesh of roast and sweetness, creamy carmelized malts, vanilla, roast and the perfect moderate dose of sweetness and piney hops. Cocoa and pine. Great fresh hopped beer with a nice sweet and roasty mix. Not a heavy beer, actually quite light in body, but packed with flavors and strikes an interesting balance A winner and fave by Half Acre.
2nd Release of the beer saw a step down. Lost .1 overall.

Growler from the brewpub. Dark brown, near black, with than head that clings to the glass, laces very well. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, lots of big, citrus hops. Eucalyptus leaves, lime. Flavor is chocolate and coffee leafy hops, orange. Really delicious. Smooth mouthfeel, with soft carbonation. Delicious. Yeah, this is really good.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2010 aroma is foremost chocolate malt, great realistic java aroma i can put my finger on, hops are ridiculous and come next: lime, filthy grapefruit and even nopal leaves. tangible, tasty even before it touches my palate. appearance is opaque with cola at top 5%, copious lacing and head, moderate (perfect) carb. flavor is strict, striking bitterness led in by fresh tar covered marijuana buds and far fetched orange with latent stale iced coffee. possibly an even better and commercially viable beer then daisy cutter, amazing and likely the best black IPA ive had to date.
