3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: SEP 13, 2015 From Half Acre. Not as hoppy or black as I’d expect for a Black IPA. More like that hoppy brown ale you see on the west coast sometimes. Still it was pretty good. 2013 bottle. Serving: Bottle

Great example of the style. Rich, toasty malts hold up to the hops. Not overly carbonated.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber pours an opaque dark brown/black with moderate off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is full of roasted earthy malts and chocolate, with a bit of piney hops. Taste is slightly sweet with the hops coming out only in the finish. Body is medium with light carbonation and a slightly sticky mouthfeel. This fan of dark local brews had to try this as soon as I saw the label. I’m not sure whether to call this a good porter or a very malty black IPA, but it was well worth trying.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. Dark brown with a lot of amber. Ashy chocolate flavors with soft fruit. Decent malts are complex. Chocolate with some roasted notes. A bit of pine. This is definitely malt forward and hops are scarce. Very easy to drink unless you are seeking more hops.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black thinner pour with a small white head. Roasted chocolate aroma. Big chocolate flavor with a small hoppy presence. Much more like a porter than black IPA, but still some hoppyness.

Tap at Half Acre. Dark cola pour with a soapy head. Earthy malts and a mild pine hop note. Pretty subtle beer but obviously well made. Nuanced.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Purchased at the Half Acre brewery in Chicago, IL in bomber form, enjoyed on Halloween evening having to work staying indoors while it snows outside. Appearance is a murky dark brown with a moderate slightly off white head. Aroma is a mixture of roasted chocolate malt and leafy hops, light caramel, smells great. Taste finishes bitter but has a sweet nutty quality which I find fantastic. Really enjoying this one, another great Half Acre brew.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Half Acre brewery. Pours black with a small tan head, lacing holds forever. Nose shows roasted malts, coffee and pine hops. Smells fantastic. Taste is dominated by bitter coffee and roasted malts, struggling to find some hops, bitter finish. Great beer but would like it a little more hoppy

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This one is complex. Little spicy with hints of chocolate power this one. Pours almost black with a tan head. Had at the half acre tap room.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a deep brown with 1 finger of tan head. Nose and taste are of dirty gritty earthy malts, with a nice dank piney hop edge. Very drinkable, I like malts, so I dig the mail tier nature of this beer at this moment in time. Another solid beer from HA, what else is new.
