4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Enjoyed on tap at Half Acre. Served in a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark amber color with some yellowish highlights. Soapy lace is left down the glass.
S: Nice burst of tropical fruits. Mainly pineapple and mango with a some mild dankness to it. Light sweetness from the malts. Touch of caramel.
T: The taste is much more vibrant than the nose. Juicy pineapple, dank resin with a touch of bitter pine on the finish. The malt bill is slightly sweet, reminiscent of sugar cookies.
M: Medium high carbonation, a little prickly in nature, with a medium light body. So much flavor packed into this beer.
O: Delicious. I could drink pint upon pint of this. Very well balanced and highly drinkable.
Serving type: on-tap

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the Tap Room. Was very excited for this one, but alas. Pours a deep amber with an offwhite head, good clarity. Nose is sticky and almost cloying. Loads of melon and a huge guava/cat piss thing. In fact, the whole tap room smells like itís been sprayed by a thousand cants. Sticky and resiny, full of late hops on the nose. No caramel, which is good. On tasting, the malt bill is fine. Guessing some special roast in here, not the same malt bill as AK. I actually kind of like the malt. Big and sticky, this beer seems like it was over the top with late hops. More of that guava, sticky and cloying hop resin. This needs some mid boil and a drop in the whirlpool additions. The hop complexity is lacking and makes this just unbalanced overall. Needs more bitterness as well. I wish I could love this beer but Iím just not a fan.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled on tap at the draft room. I havenít been here yet and havenít found much reason to come, this is the first beer in a long time Iíve been excited to try from Half Acre. Pours a rather dark brownish orange in color with a fingers worthy of creamy off-white head. Nose is pretty juicy, especially on the grapefruit and white grape front. There is also a fair amount of floral notes to it, but citrus is the main theme here. Citrus, melon, grapefruit, and white grape headline the flavor profile. Itís very clean and crisp with only light lingering bitterness. Light to moderate mouthfeel, good carbonation, soft bitterness, and a moderate finish. Yes! Finally another beer from HA I can get behind! Really nice example of a single hop IPA, would love to see them explore this territory some more. New Zealand hops rule!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Couple drafts on tap at the Tap Room (Chicago, IL). Really excited for this beast. Pours a deep copper amber pour, good haziness, frothy tannish head. Firm ring of a layer, laces pretty well. Good deeper hue, glow and haziness. Aromas are a rich melange of fruit, citrus and tropical fruit elements. Melon, grapefruit, and tangerine, good mangos and papaya. A touch sweet but rich with doughy and bready malts, bit of biscuits. Nice flavors as initial pushes with peaches, grapefruit, bitter pine and florals. Front end is bready, pale malts, and grainy. Some good florals. Middle and backend are really where this beer shines. Fuzzy peach, tropical fruit, lots of florals, piney elements. White grape, melon, firmer florals and bitter resiny hops hit the palate. Real lush and bitter with good flavors, fruit, strongest bitterness into the backend and mellow body. The sweetness from the malt doesnít crop up and get more intense like Iíd expect. Good hop flavors, the Mosaic shines here. Big fruit, bigger bitterness offers good girth into the backend with the smaller body. Good flavors, hops, and bitterness all around. Well done, flavors are potent, bitter slanted by a good deal as we move back. Really damn good beer. Darker than I expected, good lacing, great aromas and flavors, fairly complex. Nice job, guys. I can see why Drew doesnít like it.. but I think itís damn good albeit an odd malt bill/profile overall. I think Kan said it best when he said "Alpha King with Mosaic Hops"..

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2013 Pint on tap at Half Acre. I was curious about the mosaic hops. I got a lot more out of the taste than the aroma in Anicca. The aroma was a moderate dose of pine and muskmelon. Appearance was a deep red-orange with a small amount of white foam on top, and a decent amount of bubbles streaming up. The taste is where things got pretty wild. Goliath-sized hop presence: juicy, piney, dank, and fresh. Tropical fruit is the main attraction: tangerine, kiwi, orange, muskmelon, starfruit. It has a strange combination of candied flavor and a dry texture. Itís not sweet and itís practically puckering, like a sour Warhead candy. Palate was medium bodied and the carbonation seemed pretty subdued despite all the bubbles that I could actually see in the glass. Overall, itís an excellent single-hop brew that offers a nice, clean glimpse of a new variety. It coated my mouth with sour fruit juice flavor for about an hour...even after a cup of coffee I could still taste it in my mouth. I could only take one pint of it, but I highly recommend it for the hop heads out there.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 22, 2013 Draft at half acre. Pours deep red with white head. Aroma has tropical fruit, slightly catty and woody, toasted nutty malt character, hop aroma isnít as big as I was expecting. Flavors have a muddled toasted malt character with tropical fruit papaya and guava, slightly woody and sticky hops, lacks a bright tropical fruit character that Iíve come to know of this hop. Sort of an odd malf base and poor use of these hops made this not at all what I was expecting and bummed me out since it was the first commercial mosaic beer Iíve had. 3.4
Another draft pour tonight and it has developed nicely. Got a better aroma this time, slightly better overall hop feel.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2013 Big pour at the source with source meaning half acre... Pours a deeper reddish caramel hue, lightly transparent, and topped with a frothy barely off-white head... Aroma is assertive with that piney tropical fruit goodness. Somewhat dank. Juicy yet a touch dry. Really nice with hops abound... Flavors are more of the same with semi-sweet and dry with a dank tropical fruit focus. A bit piney late and through the backend. The malts donít really get in the way despite its alpha king like appearance. Medium bitterness through the backend with a light dryness. Really like the mosaic in this one.
