The Latin name for hops is Humulus Lupulus, and when we decided to brew an ultra hoppy Double IPA to celebrate the brewery’s anniversary, Humulus Ludicrous was born. Pale two-row, crystal and Munich malts form the firm malt base with thick, nutty flavours. We add a stupid amount of Centennial and Cascade hops during the brewing process and finish with running the sweet hot wort though a hopback (stuffed with more hops) on its way to the fermenting vessel. But, we’re not done yet! Three separate dryhop additions take place as we move the brew through to the aging tanks. The result is a beer with unrivalled grapefruit and orange rind aromas with a bittersweet malt finish. 100 IBU As seen in "World’s Best Beers" Ben McFarland, and "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" by Adrian Tierney-Jones.

Beautiful copper-amber color, with a minimal, creamy head. The aroma, mild, with toffee, lightly sweet, has moderate resiny hops, for an almost creamy concoction. Strong body, toffee and malt flavor, sweet; strong hopping, resiny but not much fruity. Strong final, hop-oily.
Solid, but nothing new under the sun, therefore also pricey.

12 oz. bottle; thanks Tom!! Clear dark copper with trace bubbles along the edges; sticky, butter and orange hops; thin body with stale lemons, crackers; pretty tasty, but a little harsh in the finish and overall mix of butter and fruit doesn’t quite seem right, freshness-wise

Tasted blind @ Volo, DIPA tasting 2010. Hazy gold, tan head. Nose is malt & caramel, a small amount of hop. Flavor is malt, a bit of floral hop to balance. Sweet but nice floral character in the finish.

12 oz bottle thanks to Glouglouburp. Pours a nice clear deep copper with a nice lasting head and good lace. Aroma is sticky dank resinous wet pine sap moderate to big medium caramel backbone with some toffee. Flavor is sticky pine resin, some grapefruit and really thick orange resin and oils- grassy and green with a big malt backbone mod sweetness, toffee, toast, and slight stale notes. Hops aren’t all that super fresh but they are very upfront and straightforward- and the malts are a bit too much for a great DIPA. Still pretty tasty.

Courtesy of after4ever. Thanks Tom. Pours copper with some gold edges and thin off white head. The aroma has lots of sticky pine and grassiness as well as leafy herbally notes. The taste is sweet with thick malts and heavy intense pine and grassy hops. Nice thick resiny goodness here.

bottle pours light amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is floral and citrus hops with a wood/earthy element. Flavor is sweet hay with a sweet fruity hop finish. Like an aged American barleywine.

UPDATED: JUL 25, 2010 Pours amber with minimal head and is fairly clear. Aroma is of resin hops, some malts but most noticeable was the fruitiness; grapefruit, peach, and some orange. The taste is of sweet malts and fruits throughout and finishes with a nice bitterness. Medium body, lively carbonation, smooth / oily mouth feel. Overall very enjoyable.

341 mL bottle received in trade with VerticalBaconStrips. You da man Jeff. The wax on top lokks great, but ya gotta pick it out of the beer after you open it. Not an aesthetically pleasing beer to look at, but IIPAs rarely are. Smells gorgeous - so much citrus, pine, caramel and spice. Flavour is almost as good - caramel, citrus, citrus and toast. Almost like lemonade at the end. This stands up to any IIPA I’ve ever tried. More please.

Oh boy. This one packs a punch. Pours a slightly hazy reddish orange with good sized foamy lingering head. Big strong aromas of grapefruit and orange, balanced by caramel-y malts. Needless to say, it’s hoppy. Pretty interesting hoppiness too - they add hops at multiple stages throughout the brewing and it gives a really nice nuance to it. For such a hoppy beer I was expecting a long bitter finish, but it’s actually very sweet and malty. The alcohol gives a great warmth to this one too. Really good stuff. I don’t usually go for higher alcohol or very hoppy beers, but this has made me reconsider!
