COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Latin name for hops is Humulus Lupulus, and when we decided to brew an ultra hoppy Double IPA to celebrate the brewery’s anniversary, Humulus Ludicrous was born. Pale two-row, crystal and Munich malts form the firm malt base with thick, nutty flavours. We add a stupid amount of Centennial and Cascade hops during the brewing process and finish with running the sweet hot wort though a hopback (stuffed with more hops) on its way to the fermenting vessel. But, we’re not done yet! Three separate dryhop additions take place as we move the brew through to the aging tanks. The result is a beer with unrivalled grapefruit and orange rind aromas with a bittersweet malt finish. 100 IBU As seen in "World’s Best Beers" Ben McFarland, and "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" by Adrian Tierney-Jones.

Sampled at the GCBF. Amber, spiderwebs. Aroma of mango, tangerine, apricot. Taste is bitter, yes, but the crystal comes out mightily. A well crafted DIPA... I’d heard this was overhopped but it’s not too bitter at all, it’s "well balanced" (which is almost absurd to say for this most extreme of styles) with the malt base.

Tap. Orange Amber, offwhite lace. Nice broad fruity and perfumed hops, grassy and light resiny on the palate. Medium body, light oily mouthfeel. Pine aftertaste. Nice, extreme but balanced.

Pours clear pale amber with two fingers dense beige head (that doubles in size after the pour becoming a marshmallow) and great retention, heavy lacing. Nose is moderately intense citrus and piney hops with light pale malt in the background. Taste starts moderately sweet, giving way rapidly to intense bitter. Medium body with moderate sustained carbonation and a lingering spicy bitter finish. “Ludicrous” is a good name for this beer. The head, the nose, and the finish might all be described as such. This is not a beer that believes in hiding its light under a bushel. I like it! The flavour of the Centennial and Cascade hops comes through loud and clear, and despite the colour and the initial nose, the pale malt plays very much a supporting role, rather than coming to the forefront. I like precisely this balance in a DIPA. An excellent choice to hold its own against spicy foods.

650 ml bottle. Pours an unclear copper colour with an average, frothy, off-white head that laces nicely. Fruity aroma with malt and caramel. Sweet flavour of grapefruit, pine, malt and caramel with a very dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation.

Aroma of hops and malts. A sweet IPA with just the right amount of hop bitterness to malt ratio. I did however knock a point off for being a much deeper amber pour than I want from an IPA and for a very bitter pine note on the nose. An otherwise excellent beer!

Very well balanced considering IBU of 100. I smelled the subtle scent of Manitoba bud a few times, must be a family connection.

Bottle shared by b3shine. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex citrus hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. This is a solid brew.

22 oz bottle shared by b3shine. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, faded hops, earthy bitterness, some funk. Disappointing based on other beers I’ve had from this brewery.

Bomber to taster (shared with the group; thanks DuffMan). Looks solid; malty though. A mostly transparent burnt orange with foamy off-white head. Smells of bitter hops and sweet pale malt. Tastes like it smells with a bit of citrus too. Solid on the palate. A solid example of the style.

22oz bottle, tasted at Tmoney99’s 10K tasting. Labeled 100 IBU. Hazy amber color. Thin off-white head. Couple bits of lace. Bigger body. Light, kind of crisp carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Bigger caramel malt. Kind of resiny, caramel malt. Moderate sweet taste, lightly spicy. Nice big hop aroma, but I’m not crazy about this DIPA. Tastes like it could be fresher; pretty malty and sweet.
