A nice beer, but I expected a bit more, given the amazing reputation of the brewery. Citrus aroma, but nothing too complex. Great balance of bitterness and malt - not too sweet. Would be a good session beer and Iíll try it on tap one day

12o bottle pours a yellow amber color without much head. Mild hops and some good maltiness. Hop bitterness is a little harsh.

Smokey. I canít go the nose of this beer because of the fact I am a reformed smoker. However the mouthfeel is smooth and there is a splendid hoppiness about hte initial tasting that is quite refreshing on the palate. Some initial bitterness but a pleasant sweetness lingers. Quite nice,

Tasted 8/2/2014. Draught at "Betteís Bar & Eatery", Devonport, NZ. Poured a clear golden amber with a one- to two-finger white foamy head that retained OK and laced quite well. Aroma of nice flavoured bitterness - not over-powering. Taste of semi-sweet malt quickly followed by a nice smooth hops bitterness - the hops are bitter and dominate, but nicely. Light body. Long moderately strong bitter and dry finish. Quite good.

Less a pale ale and more of a clunky crystal malt and garlic hop amber ale. Gum, garlic, shallots, tropical gum aroma... the hops have some resemblance to Simcoe and Citra, though no strong resin or Christmas tree or pet urine character, itís still far outside of what I go for. Medium body, medium to heavy sweetness, medium bitterness with prickly hop acids, itís not overly bitter but is strongly hoppy, and though it seems itís hop-driven, itís the malt that dominates: toasty, over-kilned and even smokey at times, a little bit like used cigarette filters. At first I thought this smoked malt character was in my head but I came back to the glass again and again and itís definitely in the glass, so something went awry in the boil kettle. Finish is sweet and syrupy with a resemblance to Zebra Stripe gum with milder touches of gasoline (minus the alcohol association). Fits in nicely with the Session Pale Ale/IPA group though the hop bitterness seems lost in the sugar, and the hop aroma and flavor I donít find appealing. From draft at Andrew Andrew in Auckland.

Doesnít live up to the marketing hype on the label. The flavours are there, all right, and they are nice, but overall the beer feels thin and undercarbonated. Iíll try it again once summer comes around.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2013 A surprisingly zesty (as advertised) pale ale. Definitely worth including in a tasting session if available (but nothing to go searching far and wide for if not).
