3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
330ml bottle. Hazy orange gold with a thin white creamy head. Delivers on the floral and zesty citrus and honey malt and although the aromas are luscious they are a lot more subtle than "hops galore.. and bursting" as suggested by the commercial description. (then I’m thinking Epic Armageddon or Renaissance MPA). Taste is very nice sweet and bitter with reasonably long duration. Tingly carbonation, slick and sticky, medium body, bitter then astringent finish. Probably not a classic but still very nice.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.
Looks: Clear golden honey colour; Explosive three finger head with crumpety white foam which lasts for 4 minutes; Good sticky lacing with very fizzy carbonation.
Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet Ale malt, with passion fruits, pineapples, grapefruits, lime peels, assorted berries, blackcurrant, floral, honey, sugar, light pine, biscuits and fresh grass.
Taste: Medium sweet Ale malt, with grapefruits, citrus oil, light caramel, floral, molasses, light pine, dry biscuits, lime, fairly strong bitter hops and grass.
Body: Close to full body. Thick and oily palate.
Mouth Feel: Good Ale maltyness in a thick and rich background. Citrus elements abound, with mostly lemon oil, light grapefruits and light pine. Quite flowery, sweetness is moderate and good lime peel to round. Mellow and nice!
Hoppiness: Fragrant passion fruits, pineapples, grapefruits, lime peels, assorted berries, blackcurrant, floral, honey, light pine and fresh grass in nose. Grapefruits, citrus oil, floral, light pine, lime and grass in taste; Bitterness is moderate for a lasting, medium astringent bitter sweet finish.
After Taste: Slightly dry. Limey and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: This one has some really nice and impressive NZ hop aroma, so tropical and berry-like I sniffed for a few minutes before drinking it. Taste is fairly rich sweet malts with yet mellow, limey and oily hoppiness. Not so APA-ish but what a great Summer drink this is. Will buy again!

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from bottle a golden yellow with medium head. At first smell this is appears hop filled with citrus notes. Falls a little flat throughout though. A nice start but not much of a finish on the palate leaving you wanting more.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2016 A nice beer, but I expected a bit more, given the amazing reputation of the brewery. Citrus aroma, but nothing too complex. Great balance of bitterness and malt - not too sweet. Would be a good session beer and I’ll try it on tap one day.
Update on tap - even more underwhelming

12o bottle pours a yellow amber color without much head. Mild hops and some good maltiness. Hop bitterness is a little harsh.

Smokey. I can’t go the nose of this beer because of the fact I am a reformed smoker. However the mouthfeel is smooth and there is a splendid hoppiness about hte initial tasting that is quite refreshing on the palate. Some initial bitterness but a pleasant sweetness lingers. Quite nice,

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Tasted 8/2/2014. Draught at "Bette’s Bar & Eatery", Devonport, NZ. Poured a clear golden amber with a one- to two-finger white foamy head that retained OK and laced quite well. Aroma of nice flavoured bitterness - not over-powering. Taste of semi-sweet malt quickly followed by a nice smooth hops bitterness - the hops are bitter and dominate, but nicely. Light body. Long moderately strong bitter and dry finish. Quite good.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Less a pale ale and more of a clunky crystal malt and garlic hop amber ale. Gum, garlic, shallots, tropical gum aroma... the hops have some resemblance to Simcoe and Citra, though no strong resin or Christmas tree or pet urine character, it’s still far outside of what I go for. Medium body, medium to heavy sweetness, medium bitterness with prickly hop acids, it’s not overly bitter but is strongly hoppy, and though it seems it’s hop-driven, it’s the malt that dominates: toasty, over-kilned and even smokey at times, a little bit like used cigarette filters. At first I thought this smoked malt character was in my head but I came back to the glass again and again and it’s definitely in the glass, so something went awry in the boil kettle. Finish is sweet and syrupy with a resemblance to Zebra Stripe gum with milder touches of gasoline (minus the alcohol association). Fits in nicely with the Session Pale Ale/IPA group though the hop bitterness seems lost in the sugar, and the hop aroma and flavor I don’t find appealing. From draft at Andrew Andrew in Auckland.
