Commercial Description:
Cask, regular;
This is an extra stout porter but unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. This smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink is best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. Strong malts dominate, but hoppiness rears out of this complex blend. Nightmare has won the Gold Award – ‘Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (North) Festival in 1999, 2003 and 2006 and went on to become Champion Beer at the SIBA (North) Festival in 1995 and 2006

Cask at Rattle N Hum. Deep brown beer with light amber highlights. Aroma is lightly toasty with a bit of coffee and licorice as well. The flavour however is fairly uninspired. Sort of a light astringency along with a little bit of light astringency and a bit of tartness that I’m not really a fan of. There is a little bit of smokiness as well. Fairly light with a bit of smoke. I want to like this, but I don’t.

Wonderful dark, rich ale; almost black but with red tints. Very smooth, lots of roasted malt which imparts a rich coffee/liquorice flavour but must be served warm. Not overly bitter but with some nice hop notes. Don’t mention the G word in the same breath as this beer; Nightmare is far superior in every respect and deserves its many awards.

The darkest red with not much of a head. Oatmeal and light, powdery toast. Fishy and irony in the mouth, not all that pleasant. Dates and almond nuttiness. Thickish and totally still. Lightly smoked and vaguely unpleasant.

Poured dark, almost black, with a small tan head. Aroma of ligh roast malt, dry grain, light fruit and spice. Some slightly off aromas as well. Taste is mostly roasted, though lightly so. Some light fruit and spice. Mouth is light bodied. Finish is smooth. Overall, an easy drinking cask ale stout.

Smooth pour with a tiny head and a rich black look to the beer. Aromas are malty and dry. Lots of oats and a mild spice on the nose. Complex palate blends the fruit of the hops: cherry, fig, and the green acidity of kiwi, with the nuttier chocolate malts. Well balanced and a nice light porter.

Hand pump cask at Cahrlies Pub in Cpenhagen, Denmark. Pours a very dark brown, almost black with mahogany edges and a thick foamy tan head that settles into a lasting lace. Chcolate malty aroma with dark fruit, hops and oatmeal. This is a very smooth quaffable stout. Huge chocolate malty flavor with dark fruit notes(especially cherry and fig), oatmeal and a bitter sweet dry hoppy finish.

Cask Conditioned in Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford with Maeib. Dark brown with white head. Had a stroke of luck with this one, just came on as we were sitting there, many thanks Tom for this. Strong and dry, warming alcohol with roasted coffee and thick chocolate, cocoa notes. Very nice.
