Commercial Description:
Cask, regular;
This is an extra stout porter but unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. This smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink is best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. Strong malts dominate, but hoppiness rears out of this complex blend. Nightmare has won the Gold Award – ‘Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (North) Festival in 1999, 2003 and 2006 and went on to become Champion Beer at the SIBA (North) Festival in 1995 and 2006

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Black beer, with lacing but no head. Firm flavour, some sweetness to start then a hard, charcoal briquette feel. Ashy, strong, but well balanced. Good stuff - a Stout I’d say.

Cask, the Cockney pub, Aarhus. Near black with nice beige head and lace. Chocolate, more coffeish than the bottled verison and with a more solid bitterness. Nice one.

Cask @ The Wharf, Aalborg, DK. Pitch black with an off-white head. Aroma has a distinct red wine character. Hints of toffee and caramel as it warms. Flavour also has red wine a character but leans a little bit towards port wine. Toffee finish and a nice bitterness. Could use a bit more bite.

Cask at the Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough. Superb porter, possibly the best I’ve tried. Great looking, very dark with a creamy tan head, excellent lacing. Rich roasted, chocolatey aroma. Chocolate, nuts and vanilla in the taste and much more. Very smooth, very drinkable. Excellent.

Cask at Rochford Beer Festival. Dark with little head. Quite smooth and sweet for a porter. Maltly full bodied roast malt and chocolate with some hops. I thought the Larkins Porter was better.

Cask@Red Lion BF, Isleworth, London. Roasted coffee in aroma and flavour (coffee beans), smooth and soft, with some caramelly edges, sweetish to start, but dry-ish to finish, grew on me towards the end.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Golden Ball York. A ruby red porter with an aroma containing licquorice and caramel. The taste has some roastiness and also a Christmas cake spiciness to it. The caramel is noted also. Very good.

Duff and I had a discussion about whether this is a stout or a porter. Now, with the benefit of the brewer’s description, I see it is an "extra stout porter", whatever that means. The body was a bit thin, and the colour a bit light for a stout, but the finish was rather mellow and the mouthfeel smooth for a porter. Whatever it is, I rather liked it. Deep red/brown colour. Aroma has coffee and caramel. Coffee continues in the flavour, with treacle toffee as well. Dry, but not sour, finish. Cask (gravity), Red Lion Beer Festival, Isleworth.
