Firm flavour, some sweetness to start then a hard, charcoal briquette feel. Ashy, strong, but well balanced. Good stuff - a Stout I’d say. Dalle (1146), Skørping, Denmark

Chocolate, more coffeish than the bottled verison and with a more solid bitterness. Nice one. NosirIwont (1186), Aalborg Vestby, Denmark

Aroma has a distinct red wine character. Hints of toffee and caramel as it warms. Flavour also has red wine a character but leans a little bit towards port wine. Toffee finish and a nice bitterness. Could use a bit more bite. JonMoore (1562), Loughborough, Leicestershire, England

Great looking, very dark with a creamy tan head, excellent lacing. Rich roasted, chocolatey aroma. Chocolate, nuts and vanilla in the taste and much more. Very smooth, very drinkable. Excellent. Dark with little head. Quite smooth and sweet for a porter. Maltly full bodied roast malt and chocolate with some hops. I thought the Larkins Porter was better. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England

Roasted coffee in aroma and flavour (coffee beans), smooth and soft, with some caramelly edges, sweetish to start, but dry-ish to finish, grew on me towards the end. maeib (4782), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England

A ruby red porter with an aroma containing licquorice and caramel. The taste has some roastiness and also a Christmas cake spiciness to it. The caramel is noted also. Very good. chriso (4852), London, Greater London, England
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 28, 2004 Duff and I had a discussion about whether this is a stout or a porter. Now, with the benefit of the brewer’s description, I see it is an "extra stout porter", whatever that means. The body was a bit thin, and the colour a bit light for a stout, but the finish was rather mellow and the mouthfeel smooth for a porter. Whatever it is, I rather liked it. Deep red/brown colour. Aroma has coffee and caramel. Coffee continues in the flavour, with treacle toffee as well. Dry, but not sour, finish. Cask (gravity), Red Lion Beer Festival, Isleworth.
