COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask conditioned; bottle: cold filtered.
This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew. It was runner-up in the ’Stout and Porter’ class at the Great British Beer Festival 1994, Champion Beer at the SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1995 and CHAMPION WINTER BEER OF BRITAIN at the first Great British Winter Beer Festival in Glasgow 1997. Gold Award - ’Stout and Porter’ class SIBA (NORTH) Festival 1999 and 2003.

Cask Conditioned in Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford with Maeib. Dark brown with white head. Had a stroke of luck with this one, just came on as we were sitting there, many thanks Tom for this. Strong and dry, warming alcohol with roasted coffee and thick chocolate, cocoa notes. Very nice.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml from Booths of Longton, Lancs. Almost black with tan head. This has a tarry, liquorice aroma which follows into the flavour, smooth, slightly sweet with molasses notes. Rich, fruity with slightly smoky malt. Reasonable.

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Light roasty aroma, with toffee and herbal notes. The flavor has lightly roasted malts, a nutty sweetness, and just a touch of tartness. Decent.

Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with a trace of beige head. Aroma is roasted NPR, chocolate, espresso, figs, grassy hops, and light caramel malt. Flavor is malt forward with supporting dark fruit esters and hops (medium bitterness); slightly oily mouthfeel with a light espresso finish. Medium body, light carbonation, and low warmth.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria tap ($9): Pours a black color with a creamy head. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is pretty damn good. Nice amount of roastiness with a whole chocolate bar in there. Very good body. Very good drinkability. This isn’t very bitter, but the malt character is spot on.

Cask handpull at Paradiso Dupont. Dark hazy brownish marion color, no appreciable head. Aroma of intense bitter cocoa and black pepper, subtle burnt coffee grounds. Taste is cocoa suspension in espresso. Light body. Delicious.

Hand pulled pint as a nightcap in my local Spoons 10th Feb 2012. What the hell is an extra stout porter? Well this one was dark creamy and tastey! Aroma of dark chocolate and ground coffee beans. The taste was a rich blend of the smells with a mini bitterness and dry finish. I really enjoyed it (after an evening of golden bitters it did the trick and I went home happy).

Pleasant coffee aromas, when tasted that is mixed with roasted flavours. Maintains a superb white head for a dark ale.
