4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 richfmelgin (3) - USA - JAN 12, 2008 does not count
UPDATED: AUG 22, 2008 I’ve thought long & hard before putting my pen to paper here. . . . those of you who’ve lived it, who’ve sat beneath the glow of the revolving scenarama Hamms beer light in some lone midwestern tavern with fresh snow covering the gravel parking lot - to you I don’t need to explain. But how to describe the beating of the tom-toms floating over the lakes in the "land of sky blue waters" to those too young, or too accustom to the overpriced, overhopped hipster beers? That’s the challlenge.
Pulling the tab on a Hamms isn’t merely opening a beer, but releasing the memories of millions of hard working Midwesterners collected over nearly 150 years. Like its subtle golden taste hints of warm summer evenings after chores are finished, or the first wisps of smoke from day’s campfire, the red canoe beached nearby. Your grandfather’s lake cabin in the "land the pines" among "the lofty balsams".
The ambrosia of camaraderie among those sitting side by side in caps embroidered with the names like Deere or Case, along the darkened walnut railing in places called the Jorgensen’s Tap, or the Long Prairie Tavern trading lies about the size of last Saturday’s waleye. Folk such as this aren’t impressed by Madison Ave trends which fade like frost on the barrel shaped tapper glass filled, waiting cold and ready on the bar.
They know refreshment. They know tradition. They know value.
Hamms is more than a beer, its the nectar of our midwestern heritage. Its the crunch of snow under our boots after the long week as we’re drawn back to the stool under glow of the revolving Hamms light. The warmth as the door opens. . . . "Hamms the beer refreshing, Hamms".

From a 16oz. can--pours a washy yellow body with a medium white head. Not much substance. Watery, metallic, adjunct flavors. Mild hops presence, but in general, a frat party beer.

Clear yellow, large head that diminishes. Aroma is bad. Grain, corn, unnatural goodness. Flavor is better, corn, grain, bread, sweet, moderate carbonation, watery. Bleh.

When this was brewed in Minnesota it was done with a little more care. A shadow of it’s former self! Now a little skunky.
