Hamms, from the land of sky blue waters. Hard to find, but I betcha it’ll be at some carry-out in your town. A classic beer that everyone probably drank one time or another. Good taste, good beer, good tradition, can’t ask for much more than that.

I enjoyed this beer. It was a little too, shall we say "light" for me, but good. I drank a whole 12 pack. I would drink again.

As another reviewer put it, Hamms is certainly the favorite of America’s Dad’s. It certainly was with mine. I was hooked on their commericials as a child in the early 80’s, which was perhaps the best beer advertising campaign ever! It’s interesting that it’s popularity seems to have declined to the point where I would say it’s scarce, at least here in CA.

Rated 6/1/10. Tasted many many times. 12oz Can. Pours filtered with a lively golden hue. Finger width of white head. Aromas of cereal grains and corn. Light bodied but with a bright effervescence and crisp flavor. Smooth with a lightly sweet finish. Very sessionable. I have to say that this is my dirt beer of choice! If I am at the park playing softball or on a float trip, this is the light lager I prefer. Simple palate, but better than most in this category.

Hamm’s has a very thick, white head (which overflowed in my tasting glass) and a clear, yellow-golden appearance, with lots of bubbles streaming up and little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is of clean water, mildly-roasted grains, and a dash of hop bitterness. The taste is essentially identical to that, with some overall sweetness associated as well. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Hamm’s finishes crisp, refreshing and dry. Overall, this is a good, typical American-style lager. I think it holds its own against others of its ilk.

Great canoe beer. You can throw back 12 of these on a canoe trip, take a nap, and still make it out the same night on the town and enjoy a couple of brews with your buddies. Nothing special.

The regular Hamm’s is an American classic. I’m afraid to try the Miller version for fear I won’t like it anymore but the original Hamm’s from St. Paul was a damn good beer. Pabst dumbed it down some but it was still a very drinkable beer at a great value. Oddly, the version that came out of San Antonio (Pearl) was not as good as the Hamm’s from Pabst’s other breweries. I don’t know what it was but it wasn’t as crisp and clean.

12 oz. can. Yes, I am as surprised as you by my reaction to this beer. But I was having dinner with the family at Q-BBQ in LaGrange (all right, a paid promotional dinner) and this was on sale for $2 per. Like a lot of places they have one cheap retro-beer, and kudos for not offering the cliched PBR. First thing I notice, besides some nasty dribbling from the MillerCoors widemouth can opening, is that the usual pasty pale yellow is a little more substantial than with a megalager. The usual big head of foam. And put my nose to the glass, and there is a somewhat accessible malt character, with no sign of corn. The taste is also surprisingly malty, without much adjunct in the way. Now, part of this impression is because I’m eating BBQ smothered in the establishment’s hottest sauce. But I’m rather surprised by what I found. I’m intrigued enough to want to find a cheap sixer and confirm my impressions later.
