Oats are added to the grist of this deep brown, bitterly twisted and distinctive brew. Dare you drink from Kate’s Cauldron?

Bottle. Odd notes of coconut in this brew, also light sweet caramel. Besides that, not a lot else, slightly metallic edges, quite thin.

Amber color. Caramel brew, with a strong bitterness and a touch of dry chocolate malt; light cheesy aroma, some baking yeast flavor. OK, but not spectacular.

From cask at Market porter. Pours clear and golden deep orange to amber with a small dense light tan head. Light hoppy and roasted malt aroma. Flavour is roasted malt, vague liqourice. Mild hoppy. Ends slight bitter.

From cask at Guildford Arms. Pours clear and golden orange with a lacing white head. Light breadish and mild roasted aroma. Light fruity an towards mild acidic. Smooth mix between hops and malt base. Ends medium dry and somewhat bitter.

A Mes rate: gravicask at The Junction Tavern.
Mid copper brown with a bubbly beige rim. Slight chlorine on the nose but it’s held in check by some good fruity notes and a faint hint of single malt. Slightly astringent flavour with some lovely mineral notes, good malt, good hops giving a well balanced dry and dusty finish with hints of citrus. Very drinkable. Not bad.

Cask, gravity, at Wellington Arms, Bedford, in the Welly Winter Festival of Ale. Dark amber brown with a small off white head. Faint sweet malty taste with oily dates. Dusty sweet malt taste with some bittereness. This was unusual and distinctive.

Cask conditioned at The Three Guineas, Reading, Berks. Amber with white head. Thinnish dry bitter, quite flowery in character with a hard malt note, possibly the oats. Bitter finish, its ok.

Bottled. Murky brown colour, plenty of sediment to dodge on the pour. Bisquity malt flavour, with late, tart bitterness. Sticky, jam malts cling to the palate. Looks to drink far better from the pump then the bottle. Drat!!

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2006 Cask Handpump at the Union Rooms, Newcastle 02/11/2005. Amber slightly rich fruity berries and also a little sourness. Warming whisky hints in the mildly bitter finish.

Take away from racked cask @ Winchester Farmers Market. Brewed with malted oats, I love oats but not reaaly sure what contribution it made to this beer. Malty biscuity, butty nose with ripe berry fruit and smooth yeast. Moderate toasty bitterness and just enough warming sweetness. Light enough to quaff yet strong enough to satiate.
