COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also known as Hampshire Bitter. Available bottle conditioned.
A well balanced session bitter, light amber colour with an inviting malt and hop aroma. The best pale ale malt and generous useage of Progress and Golding hops lead to a light, refreshing palate, hints of caramel complexity and clean bitter finish.

Bottle, 3.8%. Hazy orange colour. No head. The flavour is nicely malty with some smoke. The smoke is distinct but mild, making it quite nice.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Racehorse - Northampton. A mid brown coloured beer wih a whitish head and lacing. The aroma is pretty dull and standard. The taste though is quite complex. Great fruitiness with cherries and strawberries. Nicely bitter , but with good malt flavours also. Very decent.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2007 June, 2003: Cask, Dog & Bone, Gillingham. Hampshire micro brewery founded in 1992. This was the first beer they produced, though their Pride of Romsey IPA is more acclaimed and more famous. An orange coloured bitter served in decent condition. Tangerine marmalade flavour. Fairly standard. [2.8]
Jan, 2004: Market Porter, Southwark. Orange amber. Marris Otter type aroma, becomes more pleasantly fruity as drink settles. Marris Otter type flavour - on the dry side, but with a mouldy, rancid fruit that typically seems to come from poorly brewed pale malt. Limp hops which fade quickly in the finish. Not impressed. [2.6]
Sept, 2004: Crown & Thistle, Gravesend. Oaky malt accented session bitter with toffee notes. Very drinkable. A weaker version of the Hampshire Pendragon which was drunk at the same time. [3.3]
April, 2007Market Porter A mild toasty and chocolate element in this refreshing and tangerine marmalade flavoured session bitter. Quite lovely. [3.7]

"Well balanced session bitter", as per the commercial description, says just about all you need to know. Quite dry and slightly malty. Nothing spectacular (it is, let’s face it, a session bitter), but eminently palatable. I could sink a few of these, and I did. Cask (handpump) at the Eclipse, Winchester.

<!-- i -->Cask Conditioned, at the Market Porter, Borough, London.<!-- /I --><!-- br --> Bronze body with little head to mention. Strong, one dimensional flavour with plenty of length on the palate. Not a complex beer by any measure but certainly good at what it is, a English session ale.

courtesy of Laurent Mousson - clear pale golden-amber colour with a very little foam; caramelish and flowery nose; light earhy notes in the background; medium-bodied, a bit acidic along with a gentle bitterness; short and a bit watery finish with more earthy notes - subtle but probably a bit too old
