COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
PUGACHEV’S COBRA: The brainchild of Victor Pugachev -- not for the faint of heart. Pilot suddenly raises the aircraft nose to near vertical before dropping back to attack mode. Get ready for an assault on your senses with PUGACHEV’S COBRA, an intense Russian Imperial Stout. This rich, black beauty with a thick caramel head is bursting with aromas of chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon, licorice and dark fruits, while flavors of chocolate-covered plum, sweet malt, bourbon, and roasted coffee explode on your pallet. Three different dark roasted malts and rich maple syrup are combined in a truly unique brewing process to create complexity and depth. Once fermented, it’s then aged for eight months in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. This powerful concoction is designed to be enjoyed now with friends or cellared to perfection and savored in the years to come.

Big name breweries can’t hide the enormity of this beer. Sweet, smooth, thick, chocolaty with just enough of a bourbon edge and alcohol support. This will be famous!

Tasted on 2/7/14 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle at the Friday night tasting at RBWG Asheville, I shared this one, obtained via trade, I would guess from the 2011 vintage. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves a thin collar. The nose is the perfect example of a barrel aged imperial stout with plenty of milk and dark chocolate, some coffee, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and a hint of coconut. The flavor is the same and super balanced with the sweet maple and vanilla balancing all of the bitter coffee and dark chocolate. The body is full with light carbonation and a long maple and stout finish.

Bottle shared by Aaron - thanks! Pours inky black with a small brown creamy head that sticks around and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is wonderful; excellent integration of stout and barrel, bourbon, roastiness, chocolate, toffee, vanilla. Flavor follows, light plus sweet and light bitter, bursting with flavors on the tongue. A hint of spiciness on the finish. Oaky vanilla chocolate roast dominate. Body is a bit lighter than the best in class, but mouthfeel is still creamy. My bottle said 13.8% ABV, but whatever it is, it is masked exceedingly well. Excellent effort.

Bottle, from the 2012 batch. Pours a deep brown to black with brown head. Aroma is of earth, coffee grounds and bourbon. Taste is very barrel and oak forward. More coffee and burnt caramel comes in. The booze is there and fairly balanced. Body is good.

Bottle from Cali! Served at nearly room temp. Nose is full of vanilla and booze. A light chocolate. Taste is similar but a little booze warning. Lots of oak and booze. Very boozy but still very yummy.

bottle shared by tom10101, thanks bro. pours thick dark brown-ruby-ish with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. burnt hazelnuts, booze, chocolate syrup, resin, minerals, red fruitiness, coffee grinds, woody bourbon, molasses - moderate sweetness, booze - tingling. moderate to low carbonation, medium body - oily, bold grassy-resinous-bitter coffee finish. surprisingly drinkable for its abv, or maybe was it because it was paired with dinner. nice.

Bottle 750ml. Pours black with very low to no beige head. Aroma is of chocolate, bourbon, fruits, alcohol, nuts. Taste is of roasted malt, alcohol, chocolate, sugar, alcohol (hot). Palate: Full-bodied. Pretty heavy and sweet. Overall: Too much alcohol/sugar, but good.

Pours a dark brown with no real head and no lace. Nose is of chocolate and raw alcohol, hot. Taste is sweet and loaded with chocolate, caramel and bourbon. Body is full, mouthfeel is sticky. Alcohol warms you a lot, really hot. Still drinkable, but why package that in 25oz bottles?! I was a bit afraid of this one and it turned out better than I thought it would. It isn’t really exceptionnal, though.

Bottle (750 ml). 2011 vintage. From pandableh, thanks Dan! Pitch black with a small beige head and little to no lacing. Aroma is dominate by chocolate, but there’s also an important bourbon/boozy presence along with vanilla, sweetness, wood , roasted malt and light fruityness. Taste is moderately sweet with a medium/heavy alcohol warming (not as much as Black Tuesday), a lot of chocolate and some vanilla, wood and roasted malt notes. Full bodied. Medium carbonation. Oily mouthfeel. A tad too hot despite being 2+ years old. Interesting chocolate feature. Quite tasty, but too much alcohol.
