PUGACHEV’S COBRA: The brainchild of Victor Pugachev -- not for the faint of heart. Pilot suddenly raises the aircraft nose to near vertical before dropping back to attack mode.

Get ready for an assault on your senses with PUGACHEV’S COBRA, an intense Russian Imperial Stout. This rich, black beauty with a thick caramel head is bursting with aromas of chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon, licorice and dark fruits, while flavors of chocolate-covered plum, sweet malt, bourbon, and roasted coffee explode on your pallet. Three different dark roasted malts and rich maple syrup are combined in a truly unique brewing process to create complexity and depth. Once fermented, it’s then aged for eight months in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. This powerful concoction is designed to be enjoyed now with friends or cellared to perfection and savored in the years to come.

2013 vintage (I was told ) at Strong Beer Fest. Pours such a dark brown I couldn’t find the black writing on my glass. Tan head. Aroma chocolate, caramel, regular coffee, vanilla, bourbon. Much of the same in the mouth. Quite chocolaty, with hints of the caramel, coffee, bourbon. Oak in the finish. Nice.

2013. Pour is almost black with a fairly tight and creamy tan head. Nose is big and rich, hint of barrel up front with lots of chocolate cake, vanilla, maple syrup, notes of roasted and almost burnt malt very light. Good malt depth but a little sugary in the nose. Taste has more roasted malts up front, slightly acrid mid palate. Tons of maple syrup, vanilla, and chocolate cake. Sweet maltiness and a bit of bourbon and wood in the finish, not overly sugary but definitely a sweet beer. Full bodied, creamy feel, chewy and dry.

25.4 oz bottle, my 400th Imperial Stout rating. Dark brown with tan froth. Nose is dark chocolate, bourbon, molasses, coffee and raisin. Medium body with a soft tang. Taste is bourbon, coffee, chocolate, walnut and ash.Could be richer with a bit more carb, less bourbon and more maple but i’m being picky.

(Bottle) pours black black with a nougat to brown coloured head. The aroma holds heavy bourbon (alcohol, toffee, wood and pińa colada) alongside dark chocolate roast. Undertones of coffee, tar and mint. Dark bread, syrup, dark sticky fruits brown sugar also notable. The flavour is medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter and light to medium acidic. Chocolate, vanilla, wood, aggressive hops and brutal roast. The mouthfeel is super round, fat and quite numbing from the alcohol with a light to medium carbonation. Alcohol-ish bourbon, resinous hops and uber malt roast. Full bodied.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you GT2! Pours pitch black with a frothy and creamy mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of sticky lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, charred wood, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, dark roast coffee, toasted coconut, dried pine needles, raisins in brandy and hay. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, toasted coconut, high quality dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, raisins, sweet liquorice candy, chocolate covered cherries, hay and alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, round, creamy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, charred wood, toasted coconut, bourbon alcohol, sweet liquorice candy, burnt cookies and hints of coconut milk. 2013 Black with tan head that dissipates. Bittersweet and milk chocolate, pronounced hazelnut, earthy espresso that carries into a long dry finish. Very faint heat for a beer this size.

750mL bottle, 2011 vintage. Poured inky black with just a ring of dark brown head. The aroma was intense.. well-roasted baker’s chocolate, licorice, and vanilla bean led, with sweeter chocolates, coffee, and yummy bourbon beneath.. peppery bourbon warmth on the back of the nose.. really nice! The flavor opened with anise and sharp-ish bourbon, with softer oak and a whole heap of roasted coffee and maple syrup behind.. bourbon and black roast emanated outward.. spicy and warm, with lots of dry coffee, cocoa, and licorice roast on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavy-bodied with low carbonation.. dry and a hair grainy.. this was a massive brew, and I loved it!

Sample @ RBWG, Asheville. Thanks to whoever provided this! Glad to finally try this. Deep brown with a large tan head. Very expressive fudge brownie sweetness on the nose. Hershey’s syrup. Some roast coffee. Slight acidic coffee tang with accents of raisins and dark fruits. Hot chocolate syrup. Slightly boozy. Full body, rich and oily. Great stuff.
