On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Massive alcohol and vanilla nose. Slight chocolate. Black with a brown head that lingers as a collar. Flavors of chocolate, whiskey, deep fruit. Floral notes in support. Moderate chalky chocolate. Nice bourbon finish. Silky texture and oily. Beautiful.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 bottle at 13.8% ABV.
Aroma is rich with quite a bit of chocolate, lighter roast and coffee, moderate bourbon, light oaks and vanilla. Medium light maple note. Light licorice note, dark fruit and medium light alcohol spice.
Pours black with a medium thick, light mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers nicely. Light lacing and medium long legs.
Flavor has a light sweetness with a moderate chocolate note and medium light roast character. Medium bourbon character with light oak notes. Moderate dark fruit notes of plum, prune and and dark figs. Lingering bitter chocolate notes with moderate alcohol spice. Light licorice and vanilla character. More dark fruit as it warms. Faint hints of maple.
Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with medium low carbonation. Medium low astringency with medium alcohol warmth.
Overall this is a pretty hot beer and not as good as I remember previous versions being, but it is still a pretty good imperial stout. Light maple with quite a bit of bourbon character. Decent dark fruit notes. Nice chocolate notes.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Big name breweries can’t hide the enormity of this beer. Sweet, smooth, thick, chocolaty with just enough of a bourbon edge and alcohol support. This will be famous!

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tasted on 2/7/14 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle at the Friday night tasting at RBWG Asheville, I shared this one, obtained via trade, I would guess from the 2011 vintage. Pours opaque dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves a thin collar. The nose is the perfect example of a barrel aged imperial stout with plenty of milk and dark chocolate, some coffee, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and a hint of coconut. The flavor is the same and super balanced with the sweet maple and vanilla balancing all of the bitter coffee and dark chocolate. The body is full with light carbonation and a long maple and stout finish.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared by Aaron - thanks! Pours inky black with a small brown creamy head that sticks around and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is wonderful; excellent integration of stout and barrel, bourbon, roastiness, chocolate, toffee, vanilla. Flavor follows, light plus sweet and light bitter, bursting with flavors on the tongue. A hint of spiciness on the finish. Oaky vanilla chocolate roast dominate. Body is a bit lighter than the best in class, but mouthfeel is still creamy. My bottle said 13.8% ABV, but whatever it is, it is masked exceedingly well. Excellent effort.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, from the 2012 batch. Pours a deep brown to black with brown head. Aroma is of earth, coffee grounds and bourbon. Taste is very barrel and oak forward. More coffee and burnt caramel comes in. The booze is there and fairly balanced. Body is good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Cali! Served at nearly room temp. Nose is full of vanilla and booze. A light chocolate. Taste is similar but a little booze warning. Lots of oak and booze. Very boozy but still very yummy.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
bottle shared by tom10101, thanks bro. pours thick dark brown-ruby-ish with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. burnt hazelnuts, booze, chocolate syrup, resin, minerals, red fruitiness, coffee grinds, woody bourbon, molasses - moderate sweetness, booze - tingling. moderate to low carbonation, medium body - oily, bold grassy-resinous-bitter coffee finish. surprisingly drinkable for its abv, or maybe was it because it was paired with dinner. nice.
