A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

Poured reddish brown with a beige head. Aroma of berries, vanilla, roast malt, chocolate and liquorice. Full body, flavour as the aroma, dry and bitter sweet.

Bottle at Jim leaves for Malaysia tasting @ ABCBeers. Amber pour, thin creamy head. Aroma of bourbon, leather, caramel, Madeira and some spices. Flavor is quite bitter, oak, leather and loads of bourbon. Very smooth.

[2/12/15] Draught at The Sycamore in San Francisco. Brown-colored. Aroma full of bourbon, vanilla, lots of coconut, some butter, malt, caramel, chocolate and cookies. Sweet and rather boozy flavor with bourbon, cookies and vanilla. Mouthfeel is too boozy.

Bottle vintage 2012, sent to me by Tommy, thanks padre! Appearance is cloudy brown, with light white head. Aroma is loaded with vanilla, caramel, raisins, and oak. Taste is caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, followed by a hint of oak, with a smooth finish and a butterscotch like aftertaste. Not as much barrel in the flavour as the aroma had me thinking, but that might just be the age of this bottle. Either way this is a great barely wine, lots of complexity, and very smooth for such a big beer.

Bottle. Huge caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, and toffee. Big, sweet, sticky. The whiskey barrel is very present and awesome.

Draft @ Ale Arsenal. Pours a dark amber to brown in color with virtually no head. Aroma is mostly bourbon and oak with some caramel and dark fruits. Palate of caramel, brown sugar, bourbon and oak with a hint of vanilla and rye. Fairly solid barrel-aged barley wine, although not nearly the best I’ve tasted.

I drank this on tap @ the Libertine Pub for New years. Rich, complex, and full of oak and bourbon. The alcohol is pretty well hidden and the finish is smooth.
