A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. 750 mL bottle, 2013 vintage. The pour is a medium to dark brown with some amber and ruby notes and a small off-white head, leaving no lace. The aroma is pretty great. Vanilla and oak in front of a nice sweet dark fruit and an excellent malt profile. The flavor starts as expected. Good caramel and malts moving through a bit of bourbon heat and some light vanilla and oak notes. The finish is the surprising part. It finishes with a sweet butterscotch. The mouth feel is viscous and chewy with a soft velvety carbonation and a lingeringly smooth sticky toffee finish.

A top notch beer, this looks, smells and tastes mile a rich molasses dominated barley wine. 13.9% is quite a punch. The only real drawback is that I had a bit of heartburn the next day.

A very complex barley wine. Bourbon flavored and sweet. Not very boozy but sort of hoppy. Pours reddish brown with a Lacey thick head. Had at hoveys party. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black pour from 22oz bottle at Jensen park off white head. Light fluffy and creamy aroma. Taste is butterscotch, bourbon, whisky and strong. Smooth though.

750 ml bottle. Deep mahogany, thin head, spotty lace.
Aroma is very malty, toffee, caramel, brown sugar dominate, but there is some oak, vanilla, spicy rye, dry yeast, and dark fruit in there.
Flavor is sweet, caramel, oak, bourbon, vanilla, touch of hops, dry yeast, back to vanilla, some pepper, oak finish. I wish this had more hop character. The complexity of the malt is there, but it just feels like it has already been aged for a few years. If I am going to pay $18 a bottle, I want tp be able to cellar it for a few years.
