A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

10 ounce sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Quite a bit of vinous bourbon sweetness in the nose with light vanilla, too. Quaffable. Scantly transparent ruddy-mahogany body with a light off-yellow head and good lacing. Starts with really nice bourbon vanilla sweetness. Nice caramel notes in the middle. Some warming ethanol in the middle. Finishes a bit dry and woody. Slightly overly dry, but still a really good beer.

2014 vintage in 750ml Bottle. Pours a reddy brown color without much head. Sharp bourbon that smooths out as it has time to breathe. Toffee flavors and mild bitterness. Overall pretty smooth.

Bottle @ Beachwood BBQ, Long Beach. Crimson, scarlet, and garnet pour with a tightly packed eggshell crown. Creamy, leaving some spots and lacing inside the glass. Orange pith, lemon peel, toffee, candied tangerine, sugar-coated grapefruit, smoke, oak, whiskey, vanilla, and spicy rye. Fairly complex, but the alcohol is noticeable and distracts a bit from the overall enjoyment. This is a proud big beer. I’m proud of it too!

750 bottle, caged. 5395 of 7587. 2014 #4. 11.2%. Reddish Brown pour. Boozy Toffee malt nose. Piney hops hold their own against the Bourbon Caramel malt flavors. Some spicyness from the Rye Barrels with a dry finish.

Original 2012 release (13.8% ABV), bottle #4130 of 5520. 750 ml corked and caged bottle purchased in June 2012 at Escondido BevMo ($17.99). Pours a reddish mud color with one finger of tan foam. AROMA of rich rich toffee, vanilla, butterscotch, sweet-ish bourbon, wet oak, and some remaining spicy hops. FLAVOR of nice sweet caramel, boozy woody bourbon, vanilla, candied dark fruit, molasses, and a hint of hop tang. Fairly sweet, but finishes with quite perceptible booze winning out. Surprised that there is still a little noticeable hops after I let it sit two years in the bottle. A very nice BA BW from the guys in the IE. (90, 864)

Bottle: Thanks, Jeff. Murky, swampy brown pour with a small, ecru head that settles timidly around the edge. Aroma full of caramel candy, red licorice, faint wood, brown sugar, plums, & hefty bourbon. Fairly standard for a barrel aged barley wine, but still nice. Taste has a big toffee presence up front with more licorice, though leaning towards black versus red, a swap from the aroma. Much heavier wood & oak presence, too, with some lasting vanillin & tannin in the finish. Touches of bourbon throughout with a plum & date presence that crescendos with warmth. A good barley wine, no doubt, perhaps slighted by the fact that it was enjoyed directly after Great, Straight Jacket, & Bourbon County Barley Wine.

2012 Bottle thanks to northernbrews for sharing. Pours dark copper with a small foamy head that lingers nicely. Aromas are toffee, caramel, and bourbon-y vanilla. Taste starts pretty sweet but gets countered nicely by the bourbon. Vanilla cake and toffee mostly with a bunch of oak in the finish.
