A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

Bottle Deep caramel, moderate foamy beige head, nice lacing.   Moderate toffee/caramel on the nose.   Smells very green.   By green I mean a bit biting, not too smooth, needs to be sweeter.   Lets see how it is on the tongue.   Yup, its a bit green on the tongue.   Has a definite caramel/toffee aspect, but its not as sweet as it should be.   Very much an American style Barley Wine in that it has this bitter hop aspect without the sweet caramel background like its English cousin.   Perhaps I am drinking this one too early.   I have a hard time with Barley Wines like this, very green on the nose and on the tongue, despite the aging and price!   The barrel aging is minor in my opinion.   When I drink this I think to myself, HOLY PISS is this beer green!   It seems this one needs to mellow out a bit.   The sweetness hasn’t caught up to its youthful charm (if you can call it that).   Each time I sip this I just recoil with my mouth, sucking in any sort of air or sweetness I can gather around me.   Perhaps its the American Barley Wine way to have such a beer that exhibits such characteristics, a unsweetened caramel/toffee forefront, a biting immature hop background, and an astringent malty body.   I dunno, I really wanted to like this one, but its so rough around every god damn edge that I wonder... who can drink this with a straight face and think... OH, this is sooooo goood.   For f*ck sakes, this one needs to be put down for at least a year to see what it will do.   As is, its a friggen green American Barley Wine nightmare!   It has some shadows of greatness, but its so damn infant that to really give it any credibility now is just foolish.   Wait a year before tackling this beast.   I will sum it up as... UGH.... Makes me love our local Fremont Bourbon Barrel Old Brider Rider ooooohhh so much more.

Pours a deep red color with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is pungent with piney hops, toffee, caramel & cooked fruit, there is a fair amount of booziness in the aroma as well.

The flavor is layers of rich caramel malt, it’s also very nutty. There is some nice vanilla going on, it’s a sweet beer that’s not cloying with a light bitterenss and some leafy hop character. Everything in this works pretty harmoniously, just wow.

Pours a hazy, orange-golden amber with a taupe head. Head retention is average. Strong rich toffee on the nose with some chocolate breaking through. Some coconut and bourbon emerging as the head settles. A thin mouthfeel for the style. Still mildly creamy. A lot of alcohol heat comes late. Vanilla, wood, bourbon, and chocolate, all emerge in that order. Alcohol bitterness lingers beyond the finish. Perhaps I was too hasty in opening this one. I’d had it for a few months, but some age might mellow out the booziness and blend the flavors better. The nose is pretty remarkable, but the flavor just isn’t quite there yet.

750 ml bottle shared by b3shine (also draft at City Beer, SF). Pours a hazy amber brown color with small off white head. The aroma and flavor are very similar; big caramel and toffee malts, oak, bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits favoring figs and raisins with some earthiness at the back. Some brown sugar to the flavor as well as coconut. It is a big beer without being too boozy. Smooth presentation.

6/29/13. 750mL bottle shared by nulledge during the epic BA barleywine tasting. Deep brown amber pour with a small khaki head. The aroma has lots of vanilla from the barrel along with some wood, caramel, fudginess, and dark fruits. Nice vanilla in the flavor as well with dark fruits, molasses, and brown sugar. Really good stuff!
