A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

Tap at H24, Pugafest 2013. Got a dreg pour on tap, but will probably try to nab a bottle of this at some point since I’m a new convert to Hammerhead. All sediment yeast pour, still nice head. Nose still comes through with excellent caramel and toffee blonde dessert. Taste is big cookie, fudge blondie, white chocolate. Rich body. Good hop balance. Fantastic.

Murky red brown color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, sherry, vanilla, bourbon, and alcohol. Taste of chewy dark fruits, big caramel malts, vanilla, fruit, some oxidation, and bourbony alcohol I the finish.

Poured a murky reddish brown with a creamy tan head. Big and burly with a lot of layered woodsy vanilla, toffee, with some booze on the finish. I enjoyed this beer.

Bottle, 10/11/2013. Deep brown pour, earthy, nearly maroon, frothy head dies to crema on the surface, thick lacing left behind. Aroma is rich, dark fruity maltiness, toffee fudge with mild hoppy edge, soft vanilla and round bourbon finish. Taste is caramel, toffee, chocolate with mild bitter roast, piney hops, bourbon finish with touch of vanilla. Thick, round body, bit of heat though pretty mellow for nearly 14%. Not overly complex, but solid.

Bottle Deep caramel, moderate foamy beige head, nice lacing.   Moderate toffee/caramel on the nose.   Smells very green.   By green I mean a bit biting, not too smooth, needs to be sweeter.   Lets see how it is on the tongue.   Yup, its a bit green on the tongue.   Has a definite caramel/toffee aspect, but its not as sweet as it should be.   Very much an American style Barley Wine in that it has this bitter hop aspect without the sweet caramel background like its English cousin.   Perhaps I am drinking this one too early.   I have a hard time with Barley Wines like this, very green on the nose and on the tongue, despite the aging and price!   The barrel aging is minor in my opinion.   When I drink this I think to myself, HOLY PISS is this beer green!   It seems this one needs to mellow out a bit.   The sweetness hasn’t caught up to its youthful charm (if you can call it that).   Each time I sip this I just recoil with my mouth, sucking in any sort of air or sweetness I can gather around me.   Perhaps its the American Barley Wine way to have such a beer that exhibits such characteristics, a unsweetened caramel/toffee forefront, a biting immature hop background, and an astringent malty body.   I dunno, I really wanted to like this one, but its so rough around every god damn edge that I wonder... who can drink this with a straight face and think... OH, this is sooooo goood.   For f*ck sakes, this one needs to be put down for at least a year to see what it will do.   As is, its a friggen green American Barley Wine nightmare!   It has some shadows of greatness, but its so damn infant that to really give it any credibility now is just foolish.   Wait a year before tackling this beast.   I will sum it up as... UGH.... Makes me love our local Fremont Bourbon Barrel Old Brider Rider ooooohhh so much more.

Pours a deep red color with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is pungent with piney hops, toffee, caramel & cooked fruit, there is a fair amount of booziness in the aroma as well.

The flavor is layers of rich caramel malt, it’s also very nutty. There is some nice vanilla going on, it’s a sweet beer that’s not cloying with a light bitterenss and some leafy hop character. Everything in this works pretty harmoniously, just wow.
