A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

On tap at Urge. Had to let it warm a bit before I felt I could give it a taste. Nose is maple syrup, malt, and sharp booze. Taste is huge. Big fuzzy vanilla and sharp boozy malt. Long lingering warmth and lasting bitterness. Seems like something that would do great for a year or three in the beer closet. Really nice and big.

Pours mohagany brown. Enjoyed with my wife while looking at house thinking Hard to believe its 3 rd move coming in bout six years. Nose has light whiskey, vanilla, caramel, toffee. Taste follows, bourbon sweetness lingers. Sweetness prevails. Nice lacing pattern left at the end.

Smells like a wine, kind of like a barley wine. I don’t know what else to say, the description is pretty spot on.

UPDATED: JUL 20, 2014 2014 vintage. Deep ruby dark brown with medium sized lasting creamy beige head. The given description describes it well. Very balanced aroma and flavor. Barrel character stays complimentary. Alcohol is fairly well hidden mostly. Lighter full to bigger medium body. Soft and creamy. Really nice finish. This is a very good beer, but nothing memorable really stands out about it I guess, or maybe its me that’s just blah.. I guess ill remember it for being really well put-together.

Bottle @ Steve’s house. Thanks Steve! Pours a touch hazy, reddish orange appearance with a brown head. Caramel, burnt malty, toffee, whiskey, oaky, slightly floral nose. Pretty hoppy flavor. Herbal hops. Chewy malts. Some oxidation. Caramel, a touch smoky. Toffee. Plums. Kind of boozy finish but still a pretty çhïłł beer.

Pour out of 750 ml bottle, big thanks to Steve! 2014 bottle. Hazy dark red pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of bourbon, whiskey, oak, vanilla, touch of brown sugar, dark fruit. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, oak, vanillla, dark fruit, chocolate, hints of earth, finishing fairly sweet, dry.

Bottle. Ruddy brown pour with a light tan head. Aromas of sticky toffee, hourbon, brown sugar, figs, and oak. Just smells wonderful. Flavor is candied dark fruits and bourbon with touches of oak. Warming finish from the abv but not overwhelming. Delicious.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you StefanSD! Pours very dark ruby reddish brown with a surprisingly big frothy mocha head that leaves some spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with sweet dark rye bread, caramel, toffee, charred wood, caramelized almonds, toasted coconut, roasted hazelnuts, coconut milk, hay, vanilla fudge, hay, raisins and hints of prunes. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, dry wood, toasted coconut, cocoa powder, caramelized nuts, hay, orange zest, alcohol, black pepper corns and raisins. Mouthfeel is soft, round, velvety, tiny astringent and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, charred wood, vanilla fudge, toasted coconut, sweet dark bread, raisins, prunes and lemon zest. High quality BA barley wine!

(Bottle) Pours deep reddish brown with a creamy fat, nougat-ish head. The aroma holds fat but rounded oak profile of dill, wood and vanilla with malt support of caramel, brown sugar, roasted cookies and dark bread. Se resinous hops and a whisper of warming alcohol. Well balanced nose. The flavour is medium sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic with balanced, jet aggressive tones from spicy/woodsy oak, fat malt, numbing alcohol and resinous hops. The mouthfeel is creamy, soft, velvety and numbing with a soft carbonation. Alcohol, more prominent oak and clear hops on the finish. Near full bodied.

2014 vintage 750mL bottle. Aroma is fairly caramel and toffee forward with lighter notes of toasted bread with notes of treacle and burnt sugar. Moderate fig and prune notes with lighter plum and raisin. Light alcohol spice and light bourbon character. Pours a dark brown with lighter brown and auburn highlights. Moderately thick, light tan head that slowly, but steadily recedes to the edges. Low lacing and medium length legs. Flavor is fairly malty with a nice caramel and toffee note. Light roast notes with some toasted bread. Moderately strong bitterness with a medium light hop note. Medium alcohol spice with medium light bourbon and oak notes. Medium light prune, fig and raisin character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and somewhat thin with moderate carbonation. Medium astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty underwhelming beer with a nice aroma but the flavor is a muddles, unenjoyable mess. The finish is very rough as well. I wonder if age would help this, but I’m not willing to spend the money to experiment.
