COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

On tap at Urge. Had to let it warm a bit before I felt I could give it a taste. Nose is maple syrup, malt, and sharp booze. Taste is huge. Big fuzzy vanilla and sharp boozy malt. Long lingering warmth and lasting bitterness. Seems like something that would do great for a year or three in the beer closet. Really nice and big.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you StefanSD! Pours very dark ruby reddish brown with a surprisingly big frothy mocha head that leaves some spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with sweet dark rye bread, caramel, toffee, charred wood, caramelized almonds, toasted coconut, roasted hazelnuts, coconut milk, hay, vanilla fudge, hay, raisins and hints of prunes. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, dry wood, toasted coconut, cocoa powder, caramelized nuts, hay, orange zest, alcohol, black pepper corns and raisins. Mouthfeel is soft, round, velvety, tiny astringent and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with caramel, toffee, charred wood, vanilla fudge, toasted coconut, sweet dark bread, raisins, prunes and lemon zest. High quality BA barley wine!

(Bottle) Pours deep reddish brown with a creamy fat, nougat-ish head. The aroma holds fat but rounded oak profile of dill, wood and vanilla with malt support of caramel, brown sugar, roasted cookies and dark bread. Se resinous hops and a whisper of warming alcohol. Well balanced nose. The flavour is medium sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic with balanced, jet aggressive tones from spicy/woodsy oak, fat malt, numbing alcohol and resinous hops. The mouthfeel is creamy, soft, velvety and numbing with a soft carbonation. Alcohol, more prominent oak and clear hops on the finish. Near full bodied.

2014 vintage 750mL bottle. Aroma is fairly caramel and toffee forward with lighter notes of toasted bread with notes of treacle and burnt sugar. Moderate fig and prune notes with lighter plum and raisin. Light alcohol spice and light bourbon character. Pours a dark brown with lighter brown and auburn highlights. Moderately thick, light tan head that slowly, but steadily recedes to the edges. Low lacing and medium length legs. Flavor is fairly malty with a nice caramel and toffee note. Light roast notes with some toasted bread. Moderately strong bitterness with a medium light hop note. Medium alcohol spice with medium light bourbon and oak notes. Medium light prune, fig and raisin character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and somewhat thin with moderate carbonation. Medium astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty underwhelming beer with a nice aroma but the flavor is a muddles, unenjoyable mess. The finish is very rough as well. I wonder if age would help this, but I’m not willing to spend the money to experiment.

750 ml bottle. Pours a translucent roan brown color with a small beige head that has good retention. The aroma is strong with sherry and bourbon. The taste showcases caramel, vanilla and toffee in the forefront while sherry, sweet bourbon and bitter almonds fill in the back and sides. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry. Overall: Very tasty concoction.

2012 (13.8%) draft at Imbibe Wine. Nose is raisins, candisugar, oaky vanilla extract, and light bourbon. Clear rusty cherry with a small lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly bitter, lightly sweet with only a light bourbon note. So good on draft I bought their last 3 bottles.

10 ounce sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Quite a bit of vinous bourbon sweetness in the nose with light vanilla, too. Quaffable. Scantly transparent ruddy-mahogany body with a light off-yellow head and good lacing. Starts with really nice bourbon vanilla sweetness. Nice caramel notes in the middle. Some warming ethanol in the middle. Finishes a bit dry and woody. Slightly overly dry, but still a really good beer.

2014 vintage in 750ml Bottle. Pours a reddy brown color without much head. Sharp bourbon that smooths out as it has time to breathe. Toffee flavors and mild bitterness. Overall pretty smooth.

Bottle @ Beachwood BBQ, Long Beach. Crimson, scarlet, and garnet pour with a tightly packed eggshell crown. Creamy, leaving some spots and lacing inside the glass. Orange pith, lemon peel, toffee, candied tangerine, sugar-coated grapefruit, smoke, oak, whiskey, vanilla, and spicy rye. Fairly complex, but the alcohol is noticeable and distracts a bit from the overall enjoyment. This is a proud big beer. I’m proud of it too!
