COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A well executed HAMMERHEAD is smooth and dramatic. This beer is no exception. Hammerhead is a big, complex, American-style Barleywine featuring two English caramel malts and four American hops. Hammerhead’s character is enhanced by dry hopping and then aging the deep amber liquid for six months in charred oak rye whiskey and bourbon barrels. Spicy aromas spill from the glass: rich caramel, citrusy hops, bourbon and oak. Layered flavors of toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, spice and rye whiskey lead to a warm and slightly bitter finish. This is a strong ale, meant to be sipped, savored and enjoyed. Additional Information: Hammerhead: A ¼ loop to vertical, airspeed decreases and plane appears to stall. Nose then rotates and plane descends on vertical down line and out with ¼ loop.

On tap at Urge. Had to let it warm a bit before I felt I could give it a taste. Nose is maple syrup, malt, and sharp booze. Taste is huge. Big fuzzy vanilla and sharp boozy malt. Long lingering warmth and lasting bitterness. Seems like something that would do great for a year or three in the beer closet. Really nice and big.

Medium brown with a good off-white head. Aroma is wood, whiskey, honey, caramel, hint of booze. Medium-full bodied, slightly sticky mouthfeel, bittersweet on the palate. Taste is wood, caramel, dark fruits, brown sugar.

Bottle share. Deep amber. Aroma of raisin, burnt caramel, wood, bourbon. Taste is sweet, and quite bitter. Very american barley wine. Dry finish.

Bottle. The pour is a hazy caramel color. The aroma is a light toffee, very slight barrel. The taste has a bigger barrel flavor than the smell. Dried fruits present. A little underwhelming overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle, 2012. Deep brown with lacy tan froth. Nose is bourbon, caramel, raisin and rye. Medium body with a soft tang but feeling a bit thin with the alcohol. Taste is caramel and dried fig, woody with bourbon, finishing with a shot of rye. Interesting double barrel work dominates the fruity sweetness.

"So complex and so delicious, it it is up there with the likes of Abacus and King Henry (though I’ll leave it at #3 in my head til I can have it agian). A beautiful beer, barreled perfectly. So muxh going on, vanilla, oak, bourbon, spice, a touch of bitter in the finish. WOW!"

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate caramel, toffee, light vanilla, a touch of oak, and a hint of mint. It pours a transparent dark orangish-brown with a one finger head. The flavor starts with a moderate caramel, toffee, and faint molasses. The finish has mild vanilla, bourbon, oak, and a hint of mint. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel.

2012 bottle, aged 28 months in a 60*f wine cellar. Hazy ruby brown body with fleeting ivory head. Big pit fruit, lightly oxidized dark caramel, dark raisin aromas with whiskey vanilla, dry wood. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nice pit fruit, toasted caramel, vanilla whiskey sweet flavors with grainy maltage, and some sherry oxidation____warming vanilla whiskey boozy finish----very tasty.

A fantastic barleywine, probably the best we've had. Pours a beautiful deep red/brown with a super thick tan head. Smells great, lots of bourbon, some oak and vanilla. Taste starts with lots of bourbon, some spices and oak chips coming in at the middle, with a finish of caramel and vanilla, almost like ice cream that sticks on your tounge. Very complex, and a great finish. Paired with black and blue steak, the beer is smoothed out. Had in the bottle.

Bottle share. Snifter pour. Poured a muddy dark brown with small head. The aroma was dark fruits, wood barrel, caramel malts, and bourbon. The taste was fairly complex with oak, booze, dark fruits, rich creamy caramelized malts, and vanilla. Thick mouth, full body. Finish was booze, barrel, and caramel.
