For our second Local Fields Series offering we looked to match a Belgian classic with the sweetness of Southern California Dates. Palmero is a traditional Abbey Dubbel with a healthy addition of dates from the Coachella Valley. Fruity esters from the Belgian yeast strain combine with a delicate date sweetness. This beer is full of flavors of caramel, raisin, rum and spice. Additional Information: “Palmero” refers to the title of a person that tends date palms. We felt this was a natural name for a beer brewed with Coachella Valley dates. The Coachella Valley is home to roughly 95% of all dates grown in the US. Palmero (the beer) was designed to show off the wonderful complex flavor of Southern California Dates.

16oz bottle from Korker Liquors. Pours a rich amber/Ruby color with with moderate quickly dissipating offwhite head leaving a thin white ring with little or no lacing. Aromas primarily sweet, no hop bitterness and no Belgian funk, only caramel, butterscotch, dark fruit. Subtle spice aroma. Taste is sweeter than expected. Too sweet for my taste. Medium to Light in body with decent carbonation. The flavor starts with carmel and date sweetness with some slight toasty malts, apple, and brown sugar. Some light spicy flavors and very mild Belgian yeast character. Not a very complex or interesting beer which and rapidly becomes far too cloyingly sweet. Couldn't finish it as it became oppressively sweet as it warmed. However, I am not a big fan of dates nor is a Belgian dubble one of my favorite styles. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Aces and Ales 2. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of apple and raisin with a strong backbone of sweet grains. Flavor starts with raisin and sweet grains and has a hint of Belgian yeast and bread underlying.

Draft shared on tap at Aces and Ales 2 (Las Vegas, NV). Pours a deep rich brownish ruby pour, a gentle haze, rich glow with frothy offwhite head atop. Aromas are a bit sweet and sticky, caramel and butterscotch, touches of earth, biscuit, and gentle fruit. Subtle spice, mellow yeast. Sweeter and a bit bland overall. Initial is lighter bodied than expected, a medium body with decent carbonation, some gentle toasty malts, mellow apple, touches of brown sugar and spice. Middle is more apple, some carmelization really grows, brown sugar, toast, and biscuit. Gentle yet growing Belgian yeast. Backend is a bit spicy, still a touch sticky and carmelized. Mellow toast. Finish is glances of green apple, thinner body han expected for the style. Meh. Not really a good Dubbel. Looks nice, smells ok, beer is a bit messy.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours translucent ruddy copper with a foamy yellow/beige head. Aroma of sugary dark fruit. Med body or better. Flavor is dark fruit (at least raisin and date) with a treacle/rum accompaniment. Seems to go a bit thin with time. Pretty tasty, spice shows better at the finish.

Rich, muddy amber coloured body with tints of copper, bronze, gold at the bottom and some ruby at top - very nice look, all with a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of raisins, nuts, earth, dates, figs, alcohol and a hint of peat - strong and nice. Medium to Full-bodided; Strong date and raisin flavours throughout with a lot of deep fruit sweetness, some lighter malt notes and a bit of musty, basementy/mushroomy flavours like an old ale soon afterwards. Aftertaste shows a good complexity of sweetness, alcohol, plentiful malt and some of the light spices with no harsh bitterness. Overall, a very nice beer with some good sweet notes, quite the complexity and the earthiness that make it a good beer to slowly enjoy. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 02-May-2013 for US$6.99 sampled at home in Washington on 26-July-2013.

I Love beer with plum, figs, dates and the like. This beer does not disappoint on dark fruit appeal. Nice and fresh super easy to drink. Dubbel huh. Seems like a beer fruit beer. I really like their local fields series. The date fruit is center stage. This in a barrel would be nice. Rich and creamy. Delicious. I got to get a few more of this beer.

Caramel and candied sweetness in the aroma. Dark pumpkin orange color with a thin off-white head. Caramel and light molasses in the taste along with a definitely Belgian flavor. There’s a dry spiciness to this similar to a rye beer. Light bodied with a soda like carbonation, but there’s also a creamy texture with a good alcohol warmth. Leaves behind a light milk chocolate flavor and lasting warmth from what at this point seems like more than 7% ABV. Nice, easy drinking dubbel.
