Hangar 24’s second beer brewed in honor of American Craft Beer Week Beer. This beer has the added significance of being the 1000th batch of beer brewed at Hangar 24 since we opened in 2008. Rye India Black Ale, or RIBA for short, is a heavily hopped ale brewed with rye and three different dark roasted malts. This black ale features intense spicy & citrusy hop aromas with a rich roasted, chocolatey malt character complemented by a unique spiciness from the rye. A true American original for the 2011 American Craft Beer Week. Additional Information: American Craft Beer Week is touted as “The Mother of All Beer Weeks.” Each May, breweries and beer fans across the country celebrate the continued growth and success of American Craft Beer. We at Hangar 24 join in with events all week and the release of a new, distinctly American beer each year. The idea for this beer came from our tour guide Josh. An avid homebrewer, Josh worked diligently with our brew staff to perfect this delicious dark, hoppy brew.

Draft at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego, CA. March, 2013. Pitch black and opaque with a one finger off-white head that quickly settled into a thin, lasting ring. Splotchy lacing left behind. Spicy aroma with prominent rye, grassy hops, dark roasted malt and silky sweetness. The rye and piney hops really stand out along with cocoa, toffee and coffee bean. Spicy rye and hops compliment each other nicely and are countered by a complex malt backbone. On the lighter end of medium bodied with spicy rye and a crisp, spicy hop bite that lingers over the dark malt backbone into a bone finish. Easy to drink with the rye and hops dominating but still has some nice roast and lighter malt sweetness balancing things out. The ABV is very well masked making this complex beer easier to drink than expected.

This was a really nice beer. Many flavors... the Rye does a complete balance to the hops... creates a nice malty hopy beer. The best beer I had the 2nd trip I took to the Hanger.

On tap at Golden Road’s opening party. Pours with a hazed deep brown hue with a medium sized tan head. Aromas are a bit roasty, nutty, spicy, rye with some light citrus hop characters. Flavors are roasty, nutty, bready, grainy and spicy. Kind of malt forward for my taste in anything with "India ___ Ale" attached to the name. Hop character is resiny, grapefruit and a bit dank. Medium to light bubbles. Tasty.

Draft @ Blue Palms in Hollywood. Black with tan head and has lovely cannabis hop plus grapefruit aroma. Nice bitter finish is dry and roasty. Good balance, the roasted coffee, grounds, mixed with spicy, herbal hops. Very nice lingering bitterness in the finish. Yum.

Very good. All the conflicting flavors actually work really well together. Smooth, which is not often there for a rye beer. Good.

Very dark brown/black. Smooth chocolate notes with lots of assertive hops, and light woody accents. Light body for a beer of its size. There is lots of woody, herbal hop stuff and faint chocolate notes. Good balance. Tasty beer.

Big thanks to the Tucson tasting hosts fata2683 and Mrs fata2683. The growler poured mahogany with bubbly white head. The aroma is nice and spicy with rye spiciness, some malts, burnt malt notes and a decent bit of spicy anise too. The taste is similar with yummy bold spicy rye and spicy hops mixing with pleasing notes of dark roasted malts to burnt malts. The dark roasted malts, hops and spiciness all come together wonderfully. This is bold on all levels.

Growler brought from the Brewery. Consumed 2 days later. Metallic, piney, hop aromas present. Just a scant amount of underlying roastiness. A little spicy. Mostly transparent cola-colored body, with a big, frothy light tan head. Starts pretty light without much in the way of flavor, before this becomes roasted and spicy (due to the rye) in the middle. Finishes with a nice piney hoppy bitterness. Very easy-drinking and pleasant. I’m not a fan of the style, but this is decent.

Dark brown pour. Resin, rye, bread and toffee. Flavor is hoppy and bready, resin. Pretty good.
