2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Slightly cloudy amber coloured body with a copper glow and a very thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of fresh grapefruit and slightly piney hops, some light acidic notes and a touch of malt. Light-bodied; Sharp hop pellet flavour with a kick of citrus and lemons in particular. Aftertaste is pretty mild with a hint of the hops, a decent amount of the citrus and only a smudge of the funky malt flavour. Overall, not such a great beer - a few decent flavours, but nothing complex or inspirational. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market Place in San Diego, California on 01-May-2012 for US$1.89 sampled at home in Washington on 07-July-2012.

12 ounce thanks to Jose. Not exactly a wheat beer since it tastes like an IPA with big malty and caramel flavors. Dry finish. I don’t know how much the hops used here differ from the Columbus IPA. Feels like a similar beer.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bine and Vine. Pours hazy light golden amber with a slight frothy white head. Aroma is light fruit with a citrus background. Approaching med body. Flavor is wheaty, with some mixed light fruits including citrus. There’s a little spice, and there’s a mild earthiness. Nice, but hard to pin down on style. Seems like there’s too much here to just label it "wheat". For me it finishes a little dusty and dry.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Crisp cereal malt and grassy hop aromas come out of the bottle. Once in the glass there a rustic, musty, outdoor, almost vineous aroma very reminiscent of a Saison. Looks nice with a hazy tangerine body topped by a white head. There more of the mustiness and a dryness with definite Belgian yeast tones. I would guess that there’s Brett in here, but the doesn’t mention this. Some black pepper spice and a light lemon and citrus flavor and sweetness. Finishes bone dry with a lingering spicy, musty flavor. A very delicious and unique spring beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The pour is a cloudy golden orange color with a solid white head. A nice hoppiness to it, highly floral, with a light spiciness. Good wheat and bread notes, fairly crisp on the nose. Just a hint of grass. The flavor has a nice touch of citrus along with the more floral and spicy notes. Sweet bread and wheat flavors and a touch of yeast.

Thanks to elnadeau for sharing this bottle with me.
I guess I’m against the grain on this one. To me, this beer was dry, lemony and it just wasn’t my thing.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A couple four packs that were picked up from the brewery after Coachella, weekend two. Slightly hazy yellow gold with a one finger off-white head, pretty good retention. Definitely has some wit-like yeast esters, along with plenty of crisp wheat notes.I’d also like to add some pear and light tropical fruit (the description does not lie). I’ve had a Bravo hopped Russian River beer many years ago (like 4-5), but never Calypso. Flavor continues with the wheat and pear dominating, some wit esters following, and some added grain and light toasted biscuit malt (not to be confused with brown ale toastiness). Dry crisp wheat finish, bitterness at a 2 or so. Light smooth carbonation with a light to medium body. A fantastic seasonal (quite sessionable) that goes down great as well as breaking the mold a bit. Dunno why this had to be in four packs as opposed to six, and for about the same price as Orange Wheat, IIRC. One of the most underrated breweries out there.

On tap at the source. Pours with a lasting white head over a hazed golden hued body. Aromas are bready, grainy, and floral. Mild esters, lots of wheat, light fruity hop notes and some peppery phenols. Flavors are medium phenol, lots of bready and grainy notes. Tons of wheat character. Light floral hop. Lively bubbles, finished dry. Nice and easy to drink.
