4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 18/20
One of Hanssens’s most distinctive products, a young lambic with strawberries, traditionally made (i.e. with real fruit and no extracts, no sugar and consisting of 100% lambic). Beautiful pinkish orange colour, thin and unstable head (only coming forth from some bottle refermentation, it is after all an unblended lambic and not a geuze, so this is easily forgiven); wonderfully complex character which cleverly blends the funkiness, woodiness and ’barnyard’ character of their lambic with the delicate, gracious, refined sweetness of genuine strawberries. Perhaps not to anyone’s liking, but I consider this one of the most elegant of authentic fruit lambics.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, tenmindste houdbaar tot 07/08/2027. Hazy/unclear red orange with a tiny quickly disappearing white head. Strong lactic sour, fruity, red berries but I cannot single out oudbeitje. Light farmhouse, leather and lots of lemon as well. Medium body, medium sweet and heavy sour, near flat carbonation, oily texture. I find the flavour ok, but when making a strawberry lambic, why not make one that tastes just a bit of strawberry? Ok, maybe the finish has some very light strawberry once the massive lemon wears off, but still. A bit carbonation and less aggressive sourness wouldn’t hurt either.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
WTF. This is old cheese - very old cheese - with strawberries. A bad joke, like the cod with strawberries from Gaston Lagaffe. The fruit is shining. Shining over a sea of rotten cheeses.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle form the Belgian Bar at GBBF 2014. Hazy amber, very thin to almost nothing, white head. Nose is nice and tart and sour, rustic apple skin tannins, musty grain, farmyard/horse blanket, white apple flesh, apple vinegar, straw and very very subtle strawberry. Taste is tart, sour, vinous, musty grain, musty apple, tart white Bramley apple, white wine vinous, and malt vinegar. The strawberry is subtle but it’s coming through nicely. The malt vinegar and strawberry is a really nice palate combination.
