3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 dchmela (2219) - Orlando, Florida, USA - NOV 1, 2009
Pours a hazy flat orange amber. Tart strawberry, vinegar puckering and funk aroma. Taste is less puckering and light in body with tart vinegar, some notes of strawberry and funk, funk and more funk.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 MOboy (503) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - OCT 25, 2009
Hazy golden with no foam. A beautiful sour aroma with a light fruitiness that displays the strawberry little, if at all. The slightly effevescent beer is wonderfully tart and earthy. Mushrooms, dough, earth and minimal strawberry all show in this refreshing lambic.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 CharlesDarwin (2570) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - OCT 24, 2009
2006. Purchased at Downtown Liquors - Somerville, MA. An easy cork pull and little pop. The classic lambic aroma lifts into the nose, with a pungent mushroom-like earthiness, distinct goat-like tanginess, and the completely unique lambic funkiness. A hint or a swirl of green strawberry fades in and out. Pours an even hazy straw golden, with little carbonation or head. Flavor is precise and tart. Green bitterness is immediate. Any strawberry flavor is fleeting and hard to pin down. It comes up as a faint bit of jamminess in the back of the throat. Some rubbery yeast characters and then a faint floral sweetness. A kind of bland, flaccid acidity and then some dry shortbread. I’m honestly quite underwhelmed with this. I like my lambic with some carbonation and if supposed to have fruit, hit me with some damn strawberries. Mediocre.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Quack-Duck (5601) - Down South, GERMANY - OCT 22, 2009
bottle, many thanks to pivnizub! Clear golden yellow colour, no head. Hardly any carbonation visible. Sour-fruity nose. The beer starts with lots of tart fruit flavours, strawberries detectable in the background. Dry and tart mouthfeel, not sour, though. Hints of oak aged vintage cider combined with the attributes of a classic Gueuze with somevery very shy strawberrie flavours lingering in the background.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 nimbleprop (2126) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - OCT 16, 2009
375ml bottle split at Granville Moore’s in Washington DC. They served it too cold, but that’s a common mistake. Corked and caged, bottle pops and there’s hardly any sound. Pours a transparent light orange with zero head. No head, no bubbles, no carbonation. Aroma is very unique, earthy, funky, cheesy. The nose is like being on your hands and knees in a strawberry patch. It doesn’t smell like sliced strawberries, it smells like whole strawberries in the bush. The flavor starts off the same way, earthy, dirty, like a whole strawberry before it’s washed. The brett comes in after that, dry, funky, cheesy, herbal. Finish is dry and tart. While this isn’t the greatest lambic I’ve had, this was one of the most unique. The fruit flavors are far different than anything I’ve had previously.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jfb (1438) - GERMANY - OCT 6, 2009
(bottle) pours a lightly hazy orange colour with no head but a few tiny bubbles. aroma has intense funk and dry spices in the foreground, with some mild cheese and a hint of strawberries lurking underneath. flavour is the same, with lots of citrus and a hint of barnyard, some medicinal notes and more cheese, strawberries are still there but very faint. medium body with gentle carbonation and a very tangy, sour finish.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ElJefe (553) - Rochester, New York, USA - OCT 4, 2009
Pours bright amber with no head and very little carbonation. Funky aroma with notes of oak, cheese, vinegar and mild strawberry notes. Flavor is sharply tart, with notes of funky cheese, oak, lemon, and a slight mustiness. Strawberry and oak in the finish, with just a touch of sweetness. (375 ml bottle, 2000 vintage)
