New Beer Distributors, NY 330ml ($3): 2009 bottle. Pours a brownish murk with a small head. Aroma is boozy, sugary, malty, and cakish. Taste is slightly boozy. Rather sweet. Mouthfeel is much lighter than expected. This ain’t that good of a barley wine. The extra years didn’t seem to mellow out the booze taste, but whatever, it was actually pretty easy to drink and that ain’t ever a bad thing.

Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours clear yellow-orange with an off-white head. Nose is malt, sugar cubes, vanilla, citrus, some miscellaneous bitterness. Flavor has sugar, malt, caramel, and oversweet plums. Interesting barley wine. Somewhat syrupy and pretty nice.

Bottle at ÖÖWF 2012, vintage 2011. Aroma cognac, sweet, malt, toffee and dates. Taste very sweet, boozy, dates. Not as good as I remember it.

Bottle 2010 vintage shared by adneilsen (thanks Aaaron) poured a clear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, bread, earthiness and spice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, wood, earthiness and light fruittiness with a smooth lingering carmel finish.

Malty and caramel aroma. Caramel is best in taste. It has a really "Barley Wine" of saithe in both taste and aroma. The upper part of the mouth gets its bitterness for a long while. But feels most mediocre anyway. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Cloudy dark reddish amber with medium beige head. Sweet aroma with toasted malt, caramel and alcohol notes. Sweet flavour with toasted malt, caramel and medicine notes. Ends sweet with warming alcohol.

2009 Bottle.

Appearance: Slips out a clear, amber-edged, dark golden body with a smallish, but fairly persistent, near white head.

Smell: An even split of sweet-scented clover honey, simple syrup, and caramel ahead of florals, pureed fruit, and plenty of alcohol.

Taste: Sweet and deeply fruity with toothsome tastes of fresh honey, syrup, and light-colored caramel. Bready base malts. Figgy fruitiness. Mild oxidation giving a hint of sherry. Subdued hop character and bitterness. It’s a bit boozy, the Baronen, particularly on the heated, sweetish finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation.

Overall: A beer that barely achieves and never exceeds being merely OK.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown color with a moderate off-white head. Nose is very malty with the characteristic dry wine elements of the style. Taste is just a tad sweet with the malty alcoholic backbone so often seen. Interesting, but not my favorite sort of brew.

Draught, 9.0%. Citric aroma, yoghurt style. Quite cloudy, dark reddish colour. Small, but seemingly stable light brown head. The flavour is quite bitter, but balanced by sourness. The alcohol is well-hidden. The mouthfeel is not impressive for a barley wine, but OK.
