3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Bakka (16) - Paris, FRANCE - APR 28, 2002
Not very sweet, but fruity.
A shame that it lacks a little strength and it is a little too sparkling.
Anyway, this is a good beer.

Alken-Maes’ Hapkin is best served at cellar temperatures (46-50°F) from a signature Hapkin axe embossed pear shaped, stemmed glass. This wicked Belgian Golden Ale pours up lively with a lacy, but short lived white head that sits craggily over a bright golden body. The enviting aroma is filled with a nice intermingling of earthy (catty, grassy/haylike, floral/perfumy), spicy (lemon pepper, turmeric, vanilla) & fruity (dried apricot, banana, peach pit) estery notes. There’s just a hint of alcoholic warmth along with some delectable honeyish malt notes underlying the spicy, Noble Saaz hop accenuated aroma. The delicately balanced flavor starts off rather fruity with a soft, light graininess that carries into a slightly earthy, spicy hop influenced bitterness which takes over to deliver a harmonious finish with a devilish alcoholic warmth. Hapkin is a lovely elixir that shows just how devilishly drinkable this style can be. Michael Jackson refers to this one, as one of the "Wickedest beers in all of Belgium" and I couldn’t agree more. Here’s to the former Count of Flanders, Boudewijn Hapkin with the Axe and his namesake beer... don’t lose your head!

Good carbonation; fruity odor. Not my favorite type of beer, but pretty decent. I must say I was impressed.

Poured a lovely clear gold into a fluted glass. Nearly four full fingers of bubbly head, retreating slowly. Spotty lacing left on the glass. Very little detectable nose - perhaps slight hints of citrus. Quite crisp on first taste, with mildly floral hoppiness taking over quickly. Seems a fairly generic blonde, with a single hop flavor dominating. Does do a pretty decent job hiding the significant alcohol content, which only manifests at the very end of a sip with a burn on the back of the tongue. As it warmed, an unpleasant, almost soapy flavor took over.

A Duvel like beer. But it has a far more subtle taste.

I think this beer is a bit of a weaker brother of Duvel. Nice taste but it just can’t compete.

A few years ago I had a very, very drunk night with this golden boy here. I like it very much, but it looks and tastes like the duvel. I did a test drinking a hapkin next to duvel and I have to say that hapking lacks the finishing touch the duvel has. The taste is a little bit more watery and less pronounced than the duvel.

The head and hops, give this mellow beer the perfect compliment to fish and lemon.

a deceptively light coloured powerful beer, very much in the duvel style, gets better as you progress
