3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg @ The Lyric. Hazy amber with a tiny head. The aroma’s lemon, sweaty armpit, some mandarin orange. Hints of butterscotch candy. General spice rack. Quite herbal, some tequila. The taste has more vanilla. Eucalyptus. Plenty of herbal hops. Lemon peel. Wood. Sorbet. Medium body, smooth. Soft carbonation. Overall, certainly unique stuff. Interesting.

Euston Tap. Hazy gold beer, little white head. Palate is crispy and light. On paper this looks a mess. Lemon, chilli and whisky BA. Well it’s a really nice blend of lemon, not too sharp, lovely mellow whisky and a little vanilla wood barrel. Finishes dry and crisp with mellow chilli providing extra dimension without even coming close to being overdone. An inventive beer that it very interesting but also highly enjoyable!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Keg in The Lyric, Soho. Colour is cloudy gold, thick white foam head. Nose is strange. Creamy, lemon, lemon curd, sugary meringue, wheat grain husk, orange juice and something very floral and vegetal. Taste is creamy lemon curd, limoncello liquer, wheat malt, lemon juice, orange. Not getting any chilli at all, but maybe a touch of that vegetal chilli/pepper minerally freshness.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Keg at the Euston Tap - London. Pours hazy gold with a fine, creamy white head. Dry lemon and other citrus in the nose, hints of white wood, hay. Medium sweet flavor with subtle barrel notes, some orange citrus, mld tangerine, pale malts, nip of alcohol. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. The chillies come through more in the finish, but they aren’t so powerful as to be obnoxious. Well integrated spiciness. Some dry black pepper. A bit of boozy warmth mixed with peppery heat in the throat. Still some further dried out citrus fruits, mostly orange, lemon and tangerine, with suggestions of grapefruit. On paper this beer beer really shouldn’t work as well as it does. A creative recipe executed very well. A mature beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma: Unusual aroma - bourbon and chillies with a light fruitiness.
Appearance: Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Flat carbonation.
Taste: Very different to other IPAs I’ve tried. The fruity, hoppy flavours are there, but, having aged in Jack Daniels barrels, there’s a sweet sugary quality to it as well. The chilli isn’t overpowering - there is some heat that builds, but it doesn’t become unbearable.
Palate: Medium body with a very oily mouthfeel. Flat carbonation.
Overall: One of the most usual beers I’ve tried. It’s good, but I wouldn’t want more than one in a sitting.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
[cask at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] Amarillo-hopped IPA aged in Jack Daniels barrel with Aji chillies. Pours a hazy but brilliant yellow, with a large, puffy, white head. Only cask of this ever produced (to be kegged and/or bottled in the future, I believe). Aroma is lemony (although no lemons were involved), orangey from the Amarillo, and chilli heat. The flavour is astonishing – extremely rich and fruity at first, I got an overwhelming taste of mango – before the chilli heat and bitterness arrives. But it’s not aggressive, there’s nothing nuclear about this at all. So many chilli beers ramp up the NagaDeath and become ultimately undrinkable. This is one of the first I’ve tried that has true balance. The fruitiness from the Aji chillies works perfectly with the heat (which is certainly there, it’s not subtle in that regard). A fantastic beer, and one that re-defined my opinion on brewing with chillies
