UPDATED: MAR 23, 2014 Bottled 10/01/14. A black beer with a grey wisp of head and a bit of beige in the lace. A bit of smoke in the otherwise thin nose. Decent dark malts in the mouth. Chocolate and, again, smoke. Easy to drink and pleasant enough but a bit underwhelming really. Score 3.3

Keg at the Rake, 16th January 2014. Lovely porter, deep brown, black, nice ash and coffee aroma. Taste us smooth and fresh, good stuff

Bottle - Very Dark Brown (almost Black) in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, hints of smoke. Fruity; dark fruits, prunes, raisins. Hoppy; some hop bitterness. Decent malt/fruit/hop balance. Smooth; subtle, tasty. Sweetish roast malty, quite dry, some hop bitterness in the finish. Liked this a lot. Nice Porter!

Metallic coffee aromas. Nice black, with minimal dark tan foamy head. Flavour underwhelming at first but then gives way to an old ale like taste followed by a rich fruitiness. Not hugely characterful though. Very tingly.

Pours black. Nose of caramel, chocolate and coffee. A bit funky on the palate, quire fruity for a porter but also dry with a hint of smoke. (Rating backlog tasted on or around 02/06/2013)

330ml bottle shared with mr_h. Very dark brown, almost black, not much head. Spicy treacle chocolate malt aroma. Toffee coffee flavour. A bit watery and flat. Sweet coffee aftertaste.

330ml bottle from Sainsbury’s, a black ale with a beige head; aroma pleasant of caramel, malts, and coffee; taste was on the sweet side with light carbonation and pleasant molasses, coffee and a vanilla note. Nice one!

330ml Bottle: BBD May 14, poured at home into a Gordons thistle shaped glass on 17th Nov 13. I love dark beers in this glass: it shows off the colours and head so well and it didn’t initially disappoint this time either. Very dark brown in body with a tanned head that sadly fell away a bit too swiftly for my liking. The aroma was ground coffee and roasted nuts with a malty molasses semi-sweet hint. Taste wise it was also leaning towards coffee, nuts and molasses: dark chocolate notes with raisins and vanilla also in the mix. Smooth yet with a mildly bitter finish, this is a lovely sipping beer and shouldn’t be rushed. I had some strong Cheddar, Celery Salt and plain Saltine biscuits with mine and they complimented each other beautifully.

330ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. Large creamy off white head, some lacing, body is very dark hazy brown. Nose has a lot of coffee, a little cream and sweetness. Flavour is coffee and smooth sweet caramel. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy with medium carbonation. A really enjoyable beer.
