We could tell you it’s a black IPA, and if we did we would be letting you into a great secret. But as you don’t believe in black IPA, you can just pass over this beer and move back to your dark mild as after all, black beer shouldn’t taste this good.

Bottle from the lion’s Den, Yarm. Mahogany with a cream head. Starts sweet and pretty hoppy with pine notes and a little spice. A nice chocolatey base. Good beer.

Classic (in as much as you can say for a recent style of beer) but unexceptional black IPA. Ticks the boxes. A citrus/pine hops backbone with smokey coffee and chocolate notes from the malt. Solid.

330ml bottle. Pitch black color. Medium size, brown head, stays. Coffee, chocolate, sweet and faint hops in aroma. Dry ashy roast, bit of yeast in taste. Metallic aftertaste. Weird one.

330ml bottle (Omerta, Krakow)
Nice dry roasty aroma. Nuttier drier taste. Nice esters accompany the roast, some phenolic aspects. Drying palate. Too burnt to be particularly drinkable, even though it’s only 5.6%. Left me thirsty - for a different beer. Shame they don’e have any dark milds here, I like dark mild. Dark milds are tasty.

Bottle, shared with BBGTC feat. Yngwie and Meilby. Near-black brown body with a large rocky off-white head and loads of visible sediments. Aroma is brown sugar, raisins, caramel, port wine and hints of milk chocolate, grass and nougat. Taste is papery dark chocolate tones, bitter herbal notes, grass and faint metal. Medium to fizzy carbonation. Meh.

Bottle 330ml @ ClubGonzo
Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, yeast, hint of sourness and a faint hint of butterscotch. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with a roasted, bitter and slightly dry finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

SlackerMads (1510) - Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 13, 2014
Bottle. Chestnut brown with a large light brown frothy head. Fresh hoppy nose. Grapefruit, grass, hay, pine, wood. The malt profile is pretty low for a black ipa with some soft toasted malt and cocoa, no chocolate/hard roasted notes. Light/medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation, medium sweet and bitter. Dry and bitter finish. Ok.
