We could tell you it’s a black IPA, and if we did we would be letting you into a great secret. But as you don’t believe in black IPA, you can just pass over this beer and move back to your dark mild as after all, black beer shouldn’t taste this good.

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness [160213]
Black, thin ruby edges on glass, thin tan head, some lacing
Aroma - soft citrus, hint of chocolate, light aroma
Taste soft roasted malts, touch of cola, some sweet dark malts, touch of chocolate, citrus hops, dab of piney hop, nice touch of floral hop, well balanced...good flavour but rather light though...i like BIPAs to be fairly robust
Palate - Medium carb, bit over carbonated thin to medium body. Soft mouthfeel, light bitterweet palate. Finish as main flavour with a soft linger with some roasted dark malts coming through
Overall - A black IPA with a mellow stouty flavour with some soft citrus and a dab of floral hop in there. ...there are many variations of BIPAs out there - this is the style I like.....Must try this in cask one day

Draught at the headline. Dark, almost black, thin off white head, nice lacing. Lovely cascade nose, roasted malt. Flavour is roasted and bitter, fairly full on. Light and drinkable, long bitter finish.

On cask at Coach and Horses, Dronfield - Dark brown body with a lacing thick off-white head. Nose is pine, citrus, tropical fruits, melon. Flavour is medium sweet, lots of hops, pine, roasted malts, melon, grapefruit and grass. Medium in body with fine, smooth carbonation. Finish is cocoa and roasted malts. Very nice and complex beer.

Cask @ the rake . I was pretty smashed ,pissed and blitzed when having this black ipa , right after a ten month orval too ; my notes say roasty, rich and aromatic . Easy drinking

Bottle 330ml (AbM)
Dark nut brown color, good cloudy brownish head. Hayish, hemp-like aroma. Medium-bodied. Active carbonation, it’s a bit disturbing. Hayish hoppyness then late piney bitterness and roastyness and coffee. Right elements are there, they are just kind of out of balance somehow.

Black ipa molto buona, anche se con un amaro non troppo marcato, ma la luppolatura si fa sentire con note fruttate leggere che si intrecciano con il carattere caffettoso e tostato. Piacevolissima da bere!

Colour is OK with a small lasting head. Fairly bland flavour and not a great body.. Expected more from this one.

Bottled, 330ml from Booth’s in Kendal, Cumbria. Ruby brown with off white head. Not the full chocolate malt bitterness of many BIPA’s I would suggest, this has quite a sweetish, medium roasted body, biscuit malt, some crispness leading to a fruity hop flavour, a hint of pineapple, some citrus. Doesn’t hit the major heights but it’s a decent beer and worth a second glance.
