3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared at the Pre-Zwanze Tasting - London. Bottle number 212/504. Pours deep amber with a moderate, lasting tan froth head - the beer looks quite impressive, actually. The aroma has dried fruits, dirt, light smoke, subtle cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with nice, restrained smoke, modest peat, touches of roast, dried berries. Medium to full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Sweet finish, further dried and lightly tangy berries, peat, dirt, soft cocoa. Pretty nice, dynamic beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
0.5 L bottle, kindly shared by larsga. Clear dark brown with a reddish hue. A low beige lace of foam on top. Smell of ashy dark malts, dried cow manure, spices, and a hard to pin-point vegetal scent. Taste is sweet dark malty. Sourish edged with smoke and tar tones. Some strange notes of composted leaves/grass, too. Well-bodied. Smooth mouthfeel, surprisingly enough. Dryish, ashy and cheesy caramel endnotes. Hm, strange brew. If this was ment to be a smoked artisanal farmhouse barley wine... well, it’s spot on!

[500ml bottle, UtoBeer stall, Borough Market] Very dark brown pour with a thin off-white head. Big grain alcohol aroma, with a little bit of smoke in there as well. Really doesn’t remind me of a typical barley wine (other than having a hefty booze whack) – has the alcohol but not the sweetness, instead there’s a smoky nature about that that’s really interesting. Intended or not, and style-blurring or not, it’s good stuff
