2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Cask - The Bell Hotel (JDW), Norwich. Poured a clear brown with a small, creamy beige head with good longevity, leaving a uniform lacing. Nutty, caramel aromas with biscuit & bread malt notes to. Some red fruit on the tongue which is good. Beyond that it’s a fairly straightforward bitter: caramel, yeast and an indistinct hop bitterness. Not a bad surface length to to the finish, truth be told, though it’s a bit empty on the whole. Light to medium body, soft palate texture. Too familiar & crowd-blending for my liking. Very Greene King. The flashing pumpclip is about the only ’festive’ thing.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Reddy brown with cream head. Flashing pump clips are always a bit of a bad sign I reckon, this has a moderately full body, quite malty with a plummy fruitiness. There is a tinny note as well, rather like an overboiled note. Otherwise reasonable.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms. We are nearing Christmas, and the Cleveland is decked out excessively. The beer, though, pours a clear, dark garnet brown with a short but strong beige head. Rish malt aroma with juicy fruits, bread, and berries. Smooth flavor, bready like fruitcake, juicy with oranges and cherries, just slightly bitter with dashes of herbs. Alcohol hints dance about. Light to medium in body with mld carbonation. Finishes malty, sugary, with light spiciness and winter fruits. In the background, Marvin Gaye croons out "I heard it through the grapevine." I just listened to his album What’s Oin’ On? and can understand why the album gets such acclaim. I taste some grapes in this beer, too. It is warm in the Cleveland Arms tonight, but not too warm.

Cask handpull at County Hotel JDW Ashford. Reddish chestnut colour with whopping great big cream head. Some distinctive nutty yeast aroma. Some ok malts in mouth. Not much hop on finish. All about the house yeast which is distinctive and enjoyable. To a point.

[2708-20100117] Cask. Sweet toasted maple malt aroma with a tinge of evergreen spruce. Clear, rich brown amber body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Sweet toasted maple-dipped dry wood flavour. Medium body is smooth. Lovely and tasty after a long day, in good shape.

Cask@Quinns, London. Ambery brown colour, small off-white head. Sweet maltyness along with some fudge as well as some mild nuttyness. Flavour is much the same along with some fruityness.

Cask. Pours an orangey brown with a slight haze and a creamy, lacing off-white head. Spicy aroma, a little tart. Light-bodied, flat, a little oxidized with a woody edge. Dry finish. Over the top I reckon. 160110

Cask at the Nascot Arms, Watford. Reddish copper with a loose beige head; fruity aroma; tart, fruity, flavour; with a dry lightly bitter finish. Not bad, but not particularly Christmasy.

A Mes rate. Cask at the Allsop Arms, Baker St.
Clean amber with a decent off white head. Lots of caramel and a little bit of apple. Very bland indeed and typical Greene King bum rubbish. Nothing Christmassy about it in the slightest. Disgraceful in its mediocrity.
