COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
They say some of the best inventions were created by mistake. That was certainly the case with Hardywood Belgian DIPA. Originally intended as the base beer for Hoplar, our wood aged American-style double IPA, this beer was fermented with the Belgian abbey-style ale yeast we use with Hardywood Singel. The resulting beer offers the assertive hoppy bitterness of Hoplar with the fruity, spicy character of Singel. An accident, yes, but a delicious one, indeed!

12oz glass at the Capitol Alehouse Innsbrooks. Pours a hazy orange with one ring of white head. Nose is more Belgian than IPA, and hardly any DIPA aromas; some spice, some orange, a little pepper. Flavor is the same, malty, candy sugar, orange. Medium bodied finish. Missed the mark for me.

Strykzone (4782) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - SEP 24, 2012
Sampled at an esbls tasting. A copper hue with a small off white head. I smell nice big hops but no Belgian yeast. I do taste it, though. Those big hops, too. I would like more yeastbut others wanted more hops.

Growler fill. Hazy orange amber, nice initial head fades quickly to a slight ring. Aroma is spicy and a bit fruity, very Belgian. There is a bitterness similar to aspirin apparent in the nose as well. Flavor starts with caramel accented malts, moves into Belgian yeast spice, and then finishes with a strongly bitter and drying finish. Better than this sounds, Iím usually not a big fan of this style. Occasionally you hit one where it "works." This one isnít amongst the ones I think worked, but it isnít the worst example of the style either.

Westmeister (1653) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - SEP 12, 2012
750 bottle. Pours a dark unclear orange with off white head. Smell is peppery and sweet candy. Taste is highly bitter piney and citrus hops, Belgian yeast, caramel candy sweetness. Really balanced and lovely.

Draft at the brewery. This was tasted at the brewery on their Thursaday night event. Tthe crowd grew steadily to over 500. What a great event to promote your beers. The DIPA was very good. It poured a cloudy copper with smallish head. Nice bitterness through out the experience. Carbonation was average for this medium body ale. Their beers have some body and they all have a character of their own. Finish was smooth with a clean finish. Looking forward to Thursday night.

Tap. Light copper with thin white head. Grass and cat piss. Flavor follows-nice and bitter. A little unrefined.

Butters (3725) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - AUG 11, 2012
Massively assertive hops on this. Hugely piney and bitter but also with a very strong sweetness that is balancing it out. Smooth velvety mouthfeel. I like this better than the hoplar actually.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2012 On tap at the brewery. Not bad, but one of my less favorite Hardwood offerings. I?ve always like their straight-up IPAs, but this was just a little off. Poured deep gold with a slight head, spicy without a lot of citrus. The influence of the belgian yeast was almost overpowering the IPA characteristics. I haven?t had a belgo-IPA I really like yet. I?ll chalk this one up to the fact that it was a mistake in the first place and still turned out all right, just not great.

Drake (8030) - Free Union, Virginia, USA - JUL 31, 2012
Served on draft at the brewery. Pours a copper color with a medium sized creamy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of big spicy, peppery, herbal hops with caramel malts. The taste is bitter herbal and citrus hops, berries and caramel malts. Medium bodied and well balanced. Very nice.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2012 Poured draft at brewery and also in 750 corked bottle. Poured a nice hazy golden yellow-orange color with a nice fluffy white head.

Aroma is nice citrus hops with a good malty balance and a nice Belgian yeast character to it.

Crisp and refreshing, but it does pack a bit of a wallop in terms of the alcohol as it is highly drinkable.
