COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey-style Quadrupel Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgiumís revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburgís A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

Bottle. UPDATED: Pours a ruby red/brown with thinner tan head. Smells big maltiness with known bourbon and vanilla. Taste comes off very fruity/cherry, sweet caramel malts, lighter than expected bourbon notes, some booze, raisins, oak. Medium body. Complex, and I liked it because the bourbon aging was not overly powerful. Would have been better if not for the big cherry notes which grew tiresome by the end of the brew.

Draft at Bru Craft. Murky brown amber pour with good khaki foam on top. Nice bourbon barrel elements but the Belgium Quad underneath feels unexceptional. Modest dark fruit and medium caramel malts. Tastes good but the depth of flavor appears to be coming mostly from the Bourbon.

This is a good ass beer. Itís not on par with Allagashís Curieux, but itís a great bourbon aged beer. Itís got a vanilla aftertaste, which is easy on the tastebuds, but not extremely pleasing because it kind of tastes out of place, but itís a good product overall.

Poured from a tap at The Torch. Great beer, lighter color than I expected. Aroma of dark chocolate and cherries. Not as creamy/smooth on the way down as I had hoped, but still delicious.

This poured a lighter brown color with a small beige head. Aroma was of big barrel, some dark fruits and caramel. Flavor doesnít have as much heat as the nose would suggest, somewhat complex balance of barrel and dark fruit. Tasty stuff.
