Abbey-style Quadrupel Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgium’s revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburg’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

750 ml, caged and corked bottle. Drank one of my last bottles of this last night. The bourbon is the first thing I notice in the aroma with hints of caramel, molasses and toffee and a slight hint of vanilla. This beer has a nice warmth from the alcohol and the vanilla comes through more in the flavor than the aroma. An almost full bodied beer in terms of the mouthfeel with a nice lasting finish. Very fortunate to have this brewery in my backyard!

Bottle, 2012 vintage. Pours a clear orangey garnet, no head. Aroma is very nice: bourbon, brandy, sweet red fruits, caramel apple, prune, lots of OG Belgian quad character. Taste is a bit of a letdown relative to the nose: honey, light bourbon, Earl Grey tea, light sourness, caramel. Slightly spritzy carbonation. Decent.

750 I brought to share. Malty sweet bourbon nose and taste. Light fruit. Some vanilla in finish. Not what I expected. Nice.

Thick and delicious. A strong, bourbony take on the quad. Not much vanilla, but the dark fruit is delicious.

Draft pour. Pours a clear copper with a thin white head of foam. The aroma has big boozy bourbon with notes of vanilla, caramel, coconut. The taste is major sweetness and boozyness. Thicker body with a sticky mouthfeel and a moderate carbonation level.

750ml bottle in a teku. Pours deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of bourbon and oak, some spicy yeast, some caramel and pale malts, notes of dark fruits, and some light bitterness. Flavor the same. Average texture. A decent beer but could be better.

This brew pours a dark reddish-mahogany color with a medium dense light beige head that recedes gradually. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of malt, caramel and dark fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, earthy yeast and caramel malt. Subtle oaky bourbon in the background. The finish is oaky vanilla and dark fruit. Above average overall.

Reddish brown in color... Aroma of vanilla, oak, caramel, bourbon... Flavor is dark fruits, raisins, almonds... Bourbon overpowers beer, boozy finish... Fairly thin base beer in comparison... Decent ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2014 vintage. Pours a clear dark amber with one finger of whispy white foam. Nose is very whiskey forward. Toffee, vanilla, oak, and char. Dark fruits and brown sugar finish it off but the barrel is the real start here. Taste is butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, oak, candi sugar and some pit fruits. Finishes slightly bitter and boozy but the oak and vanilla really smooth things out. This is a very delicious barrel aged beer, although I don’t get very many quadruple characteristics.

Pours from the bottle with a hazy, rust color, an average head, and tenacious lace. Big legs on this one, no surprise at 12% abv. The nose is pears, figs, butterscotch, lemon-grass, and booze. The flavor is really boozy. There’s a big oak presence, lots of vanilla, and a spicy finish. Medium mouthfeel, crisp, and lots of alcohol vapor on the finish. This was right up my ally.

(bottle - corked & caged 750 ml) Dark ruby red pour with a tan head. Big bourbon and dark fruit nose. Some dark fruits as well. Flavor is predominantly vanilla bourbon notes with some plum and cherry hints underneath. Lots of booze in the background and a slightly odd aftertaste, but not too bad.
