COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey-style Quadrupel Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgium’s revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburg’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

750 ml, caged and corked bottle. Drank one of my last bottles of this last night. The bourbon is the first thing I notice in the aroma with hints of caramel, molasses and toffee and a slight hint of vanilla. This beer has a nice warmth from the alcohol and the vanilla comes through more in the flavor than the aroma. An almost full bodied beer in terms of the mouthfeel with a nice lasting finish. Very fortunate to have this brewery in my backyard!

750, thanks Richard. Dark brown copper color. Smell and taste are butterscotch candy, touch of vanilla and bourbon. Has a slight Belgian yeast. Pretty tasty.

Bottle shared late night during RBWG 2015. Pours clear russet with a creamy off-white head. The nose has some tangerine, marmalade, grainy pale bread. Big sweet flavor with vanilla cake, more tangerine, hay. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish with rich, ripe citrus fruits, melon, tangerine. Decent.

22oz bottle, tasted during RBWG hotel tasting. Hazy red orange color. Thin off-white head. Dots and bits of lace. Bourbon, oak, some dark fruit, mild spice, some paper. Moderate-plus bitter taste, light sweet, kind of dry finish. Bigger body. Kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Dry finish. Alright bourbon cru. Doesn’t seem fresh to me. Not enough quad character.

Bottle from Beechner, the whale slayer himself. Pours muddy Amber, slim off white head with zero retention. Nose is typical quad with some bourbon. Taste is more muddled, some bourbon, burnt sugars. Booze is hot and burns. It’s pefect in that regard. Body is full.

Bottle, 2012 vintage. Pours a clear orangey garnet, no head. Aroma is very nice: bourbon, brandy, sweet red fruits, caramel apple, prune, lots of OG Belgian quad character. Taste is a bit of a letdown relative to the nose: honey, light bourbon, Earl Grey tea, light sourness, caramel. Slightly spritzy carbonation. Decent.
