COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hardywood Bourbon DIPA is hopped with a heavy dose of Columbus, Cascade and Summit hops, fermented with an abbey ale yeast that imparts some subtle tropical fruit and peppery notes and conditioned twelve weeks in freshly emptied Virginia bourbon barrels from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA.

750 cc from Whole Foods and Capone’s. Poured clear dark straw toward brown with minimal off-white head. Nose is resiny hops, vanilla, bourbon, Smelled good. Tasted dense and complex on the palate, with flavors of caramel malt, hops, pine, bourbon, and a well integrated bourbon that complemented the other ingredients. Very solid.

22 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. 2014 release aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels. Clear amber with two fingers of beige head. Aromas of citrus, charred oak, light bourbon if any, a bit of tropical fruit, some dark fruit. Tastes of citrus, light bourbon, oak, a bit of dark fruit, some spices. Medium body with a dry finish. Low carbonation. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

Very nice, slightly hazy amber and copper coloured body with a bright orange glow and a thick, dense, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of super pungent hops, resin, pineapple tucked inside a big oak box with cedar, spruce and a lot of woodsy and herbal notes - a very nice smell. Medium to Full-bodied; Super pungent and deep flavours throughout with a big hit of alcohol at first, followed by a passionfruit and pineapple sweetness that all ends up with a lot of oaky and bourbon flavours intertwined throughout the hops, sweetness and alcohol with a large body, but a good deal of complexity. Aftertaste shows a lot of the bourbon barrel notes with the oaky flavour, but also of the boozy depth of alcohol that came from the barrels. Overall, a ridiculously strong and deep beer that is pretty much exactly what I thought it would be - a rich imperial IPA with a ton of bourbon and oaky flavours. This hits hard and strong, but almost everything about it is great, with my only advice is to enlist someone else to drink this with you - it’s a lot of beer! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Falls Church (Skyline), Virginia on 19-September-2014 for US$12,99 sampled at home in Washington here just nine days later on 28-September-2014.

Oak and bourbon, lemon zest. Cloudy auburn, thick sticky yellow head. Oak and nougat flavor. Whole orange and bourbon accents. Very subtle vanilla. Medium body. Multi-layered and quite good.

Draft at Smoke & Barrel. Clear deep amber gold, large white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, bready lemon. Taste is big and boozy.

750ml, caged and corked bottle. Poured an amberish color with an off white head. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon, some woodiness, citrus, and caramel. I’d say alcohol well hidden, but it is only 9.4 % (does that mean I have a problem!).

From 750 ml bottle, corked and caged bottle poured a dark orangish amber color with aromas of vanilla, booze, hops and light butter. Flavors were light hops with some bourbon oakiness in the aftertaste. A nice bourbon aged DIPA. Really like it.

From notes: Poured from a bottle it is a dark amber color with a slight head. The aroma is vanilla and the taste is a nice bourbon flavor.

Ok but another example of excessive barreling. The age kills the hops, the barrel kills the hops, and this doesn’t really end up tasting like an IPA let alone a DIPA. That being said, it’s an ok beer, as long as you take your preconceived notion of IPA out of the equation. But not a great beer. Tap at Churchkey.

750ml bottle pours a fairly dark orange, basically a caramel colored brown with some sudsy, lacing, off white head. Nose is interesting, there isn’t a ton of prevalent bourbon or DIPA there really, a little licorice, some sumac, some mild peppercorn, vanilla, some mild wood pulp, some dried cherry. Nose is very interesting, it’s really all over the place but not in a bad way. Flavor is more of a barreled BSDA than anything, some candy sugar, some malt, some caramel, some soap, some herbs, more of that sumac, a little black licorice, vanillin, a little orange, some wood, a little dried coconut. Full bodied, lightly sweet finish. If you were expecting a double IPA, then you’ll be disappointed. If you wanted a good beer, you’ve found one.
