COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hardywood Bourbon DIPA is hopped with a heavy dose of Columbus, Cascade and Summit hops, fermented with an abbey ale yeast that imparts some subtle tropical fruit and peppery notes and conditioned twelve weeks in freshly emptied Virginia bourbon barrels from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA.

bottle, from Brewery. good aroma, sweet, fruity, barrel. getting apple, lemon, mango, bourbon, vanilla. 1st pout clean brownish orange color, ok head that faded quick, spotty lace. bitter sweet flavor. heavy body thick viscous oily mouthfeel, dry bitter sweet finish, That’s nice, was ready not to like a Barrel IIPA but the abbey yeast adds a layer that makes it work. barrel nice level, doesn’t dominate. doesn’t quite go over the top for me, but darn good

750mL bottle, pours a dark amber with a medium white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, a little oak, and caramel. Flavour brings out Belgian yeast, caramel, vegetal notes, and earthiness. Bizarre flavours - certainly not like a regular IIPA. Lightly sweet, vegetal and yeasty. Interesting but not so good.

Sampled at esbls. Just a little haze in this brown beer. A big soapy foam. A lotvof rum and wood in here. Hops are almost over powered. They are felt as much as tasted. A good bit of fruit. They groe, though. A lot going on here and pretty much all of it good.

750ml corked bottle from Drake. Thanks Dan! Pours amber copper with a white head leaving streaky lacing. Aroma has fruits, pine, vanilla and tangy spices. Taste is of sweet fruits, sweet vanilla, oranges, tangy spice and some resin and some biscuity malts. Amazed how nice blended, and tasty, the vanilla, the fruit and the belgian-y influence are. Not a typical fan of barrel aging IPAs, or belgian-y IPAs, but this blend is very good. Medium bodied and sticky. Finishes more sweet than bitter, but the bitterness is a player. Very enjoyable. Neither too bourbon-y or too belgian-y. 14.8

750 cc from Whole Foods and Capone’s. Poured clear dark straw toward brown with minimal off-white head. Nose is resiny hops, vanilla, bourbon, Smelled good. Tasted dense and complex on the palate, with flavors of caramel malt, hops, pine, bourbon, and a well integrated bourbon that complemented the other ingredients. Very solid.

22 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. 2014 release aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels. Clear amber with two fingers of beige head. Aromas of citrus, charred oak, light bourbon if any, a bit of tropical fruit, some dark fruit. Tastes of citrus, light bourbon, oak, a bit of dark fruit, some spices. Medium body with a dry finish. Low carbonation. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

Very nice, slightly hazy amber and copper coloured body with a bright orange glow and a thick, dense, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of super pungent hops, resin, pineapple tucked inside a big oak box with cedar, spruce and a lot of woodsy and herbal notes - a very nice smell. Medium to Full-bodied; Super pungent and deep flavours throughout with a big hit of alcohol at first, followed by a passionfruit and pineapple sweetness that all ends up with a lot of oaky and bourbon flavours intertwined throughout the hops, sweetness and alcohol with a large body, but a good deal of complexity. Aftertaste shows a lot of the bourbon barrel notes with the oaky flavour, but also of the boozy depth of alcohol that came from the barrels. Overall, a ridiculously strong and deep beer that is pretty much exactly what I thought it would be - a rich imperial IPA with a ton of bourbon and oaky flavours. This hits hard and strong, but almost everything about it is great, with my only advice is to enlist someone else to drink this with you - it’s a lot of beer! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Falls Church (Skyline), Virginia on 19-September-2014 for US$12,99 sampled at home in Washington here just nine days later on 28-September-2014.

Draft at Smoke & Barrel. Clear deep amber gold, large white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, bready lemon. Taste is big and boozy.
