Hardywood Bourbon DIPA is hopped with a heavy dose of Columbus, Cascade and Summit hops, fermented with an abbey ale yeast that imparts some subtle tropical fruit and peppery notes and conditioned twelve weeks in freshly emptied Virginia bourbon barrels from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA.

Oak and bourbon, lemon zest. Cloudy auburn, thick sticky yellow head. Oak and nougat flavor. Whole orange and bourbon accents. Very subtle vanilla. Medium body. Multi-layered and quite good.

Draft at Smoke & Barrel. Clear deep amber gold, large white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of vanilla, bready lemon. Taste is big and boozy.

750ml, caged and corked bottle. Poured an amberish color with an off white head. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon, some woodiness, citrus, and caramel. I’d say alcohol well hidden, but it is only 9.4 % (does that mean I have a problem!).

From 750 ml bottle, corked and caged bottle poured a dark orangish amber color with aromas of vanilla, booze, hops and light butter. Flavors were light hops with some bourbon oakiness in the aftertaste. A nice bourbon aged DIPA. Really like it.

From notes: Poured from a bottle it is a dark amber color with a slight head. The aroma is vanilla and the taste is a nice bourbon flavor.

Ok but another example of excessive barreling. The age kills the hops, the barrel kills the hops, and this doesn’t really end up tasting like an IPA let alone a DIPA. That being said, it’s an ok beer, as long as you take your preconceived notion of IPA out of the equation. But not a great beer. Tap at Churchkey.

750ml bottle pours a fairly dark orange, basically a caramel colored brown with some sudsy, lacing, off white head. Nose is interesting, there isn’t a ton of prevalent bourbon or DIPA there really, a little licorice, some sumac, some mild peppercorn, vanilla, some mild wood pulp, some dried cherry. Nose is very interesting, it’s really all over the place but not in a bad way. Flavor is more of a barreled BSDA than anything, some candy sugar, some malt, some caramel, some soap, some herbs, more of that sumac, a little black licorice, vanillin, a little orange, some wood, a little dried coconut. Full bodied, lightly sweet finish. If you were expecting a double IPA, then you’ll be disappointed. If you wanted a good beer, you’ve found one.

Aromas of caramel, orange, vanilla, some bourbon. Lightly hazy, dark orange, moderately lasting beige head. A touch of initial sweetness combining with notes of bourbon and vanilla, followed by herbaceous and citrus hop flavors. Medium-full bodied, a little boozy.

If you like Belgian style with lots of bourbon then this is for you. Well balanced with bourbon flowing in and out through toffee, bready, and vanilla notes. Great balance! Would age well.

From a cork and caged 75 cl bottle shared at the Beer Head BBQ in Falls Church VA. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Butterscotch nose. Flavors of oak and vanilla. Medium body. Viscous mouthfeel. Boozy finish.
