Gingerbread Stout Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

Draft at Mekong. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Solid bourbon notes on the nose along with the ginger. I think the barrel aging muted the big ginger and chocolate notes on the tongue though it's still tasty. Finished clean. Hides it's booze well. It's solid but I prefer the standard version. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Smells delicious, like a gingerbread man. Taste is pretty much all chocolate malt and gingerbread cookie. Medium body, medium carbonation, mild foam, and very slight alcohol heat.

bottle shared at our big bottle share tasting. poured darker black colour with a tanned head on top. aroma is bursting with spices, herbal ginger, nutmeg, roasted malts, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, can’t detect any bourbon in there because it’s overpowered by all the spices. not my cup of tea

2014 bottle. Black with brown foam. Aroma certainly as advertised. Gingerbread spices and vanilla. Bourbon notes backing it up. Light fruits at the edges. Taste starts with sweet cocoa, bourbon and spice notes then kick in. Drying, woody finish. Taste is a bit harsher than aroma but still nice. An impressive creation.

Had a vertical of 2013-2015. 2014 was drinking the best. 2013 was a bit past its prime and really didn’t get as much Ginger bread. I recommend sitting on this beer for year. So my rating is for the 2014

How: Bottle (750 ml) at tasting. From Frank, thanks!

>>> A good barrel-aged spicy stout that, despite not being easy drinking even for the style, is rather cohesive and well "balanced".

+ Spices, bourbon, caramel, and vanilla share the spotlight in a rather cohesive way
+ The barrel treatment is well executed and not overwhelming
Despite being rather well balanced, a flavor profile like this one make the beer cloying quickly
Although it’s deeper and more complex than the regular version, it still only have an average body for the style
Much better than the non barrel-aged version, which was really thin

Flavors: Ginger, bourbon, roasted malts, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel
