Gingerbread Stout Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

Thanks to Lunch for sharing this bottle. Served in a Hardywood goblet. Pours dark. The nose has loads of bourbon atop hefty spice and a bit of vanilla, chocolate, and roast. Flavor is similarly dominated by bourbon and spice. The bourbon does a good job knocking out some of the spice, but then itself is too strong. Spice and bourbon, not much else.

How: Bottle (750 ml) at tasting. From Frank, thanks!

>>> A good barrel-aged spicy stout that, despite not being easy drinking even for the style, is rather cohesive and well "balanced".

+ Spices, bourbon, caramel, and vanilla share the spotlight in a rather cohesive way
+ The barrel treatment is well executed and not overwhelming
Despite being rather well balanced, a flavor profile like this one make the beer cloying quickly
Although it’s deeper and more complex than the regular version, it still only have an average body for the style
Much better than the non barrel-aged version, which was really thin

Flavors: Ginger, bourbon, roasted malts, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel

Bottle shared by Armin, thanks! Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma is full of gingerbread with dark chocolate and a dark grain backbone. Flavor is muddled with ginger and graham cracker up front and bourbon and dark grains in the finish.

Dark pour with coppery edges and one finger of dark tan head. Nose is very nice, coconut shows from the barrel with ginger and spice cake. Dense ginger and coconut with spicy notes and sweet bread. Dry spice and medium full body.
