COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An assertive Imperial Stout aged 12 weeks in bourbon barrels and conditioned on custom roasted Sidamo coffee from Lamplighter Roasting Company, Bourbon Sidamo showcases the signature flavors of whiskey, roasted malt and Ethiopian coffee. This robust stout displays a midnight hue with a caramel head and offers a dark chocolate character laced with hints of blueberry from this unique coffee bean, rounded out by charred White Oak infused by an angel’s share of Kentucky goodness.

A bit ashy/cheap whiskey with hints of coffee, but not nearly what I would expect given all the interesting descriptions about blueberry and dark cocoa and the such. I’d like to try the base beer and see if the barrels were the problem for me.

On draught at Mekong. Brownish-black color with a medium thick beige head that diminishes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, bourbon and vanilla. Full-bodied with flavors of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and bourbon. The finish is roasty coffee and oaky vanilla. Pretty good overall.

750 ml bottle shared at RBWG in the Friday night tasting. Pours a hazed brown with a small beige head. Bourbon warms this throughout, with notes of coffee, earth, chocolate, oak, and dark fruit. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, rich mouthfeel. Like the base beer, a bit of a disappointment. But this is a modest improvement on the base.

Draft at Rustico Alexandria. Poured a thin dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma was bourbon, vanilla, coffee notes. Lots of alcohol burn aromas, but none of the actual burn on this one. Flavor was pretty smooth alcohol notes, some bitter, dark chocolates. Vanilla, some woody notes. Pretty easy to drink, but the bourbon kind of overpowers the base beer a bit. I like the experiments that Hardywood releases, regardless.

750ml bottle, taste from it. Moderate clear brown color. Minimal khaki head. Couple dots of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. lightly slick. More sweet taste, less bitter, light bite. Caramel, light molasses, sugary spicy notes. Just a little coffee, not as much as I expected. OK barrel aged coffee imperial stout.... A bit spicier, hotter than expected. Not smooth and magical, like I expect the style to be. Solid still, though.

Bottle (2014 Release) poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours a brownish black with almost a finger tan head. Aromas of bourbon, coconut, vanilla, coffee, roast, . Tasting notes of bourbon, berries, roast, dark chocolate, light coffee. Barrel aging seems to have faded the coffee. Great barrel character on the nose, not quite as equal on the taste. Medium body with a semi-dry finish, would like a fuller body. Think I actually prefer the non-barrel aged version.

Bottle shared at the Foothills Sexual Chocolate pre-release party. Pours a thin dark brown. Sort of weird that there’s all this bourbon flavor here but without the chocolate or coffee that comes with an impy stout. It’s not that it overpowers them; I really didn’t get them at all. Luckily the bourbon drink pretty good.
