COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Belgium’s southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin is brewed with a blend of rye, wheat and barley, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Beyond this, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin breaks totally free of classic style guidelines. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madegascar clove and whole allspice are harmonized with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root. A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

750ml from Once Upon a Vine, Richmond. Hazy pale orange pour, with moderate sediment swirling around and a medium prickly carbonation. Nose of mild yeast, some generic spice, and a touch of sweet heat. Body is a bit sharp from the combination of various spices, and it gives things a dry finish that helps the beer (which might otherwise be too sweet). Could be more of a solid farmhouse at its base though.

Thanks to Butters. Cloudy amber pour. The nose holds pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet raisin toast, and a touch of dried apricot. The flavor is dull, with mostly spice and pumpkin and not much intrigue or balance. Medium bodied, oily and uninteresting palate. Really not awful, but just monumentally boring.

Hazy amber, thin fizzy head, lace of small bubbles. Pumpkin and puke, bit of oregano and sage and sugar in the nose as well. Flavor is heavy sugar, metallic carbonation through light spice and bread finish, saving it from being entirely muted.

750mL thanks to Butters. Pours a tepid, clear orange with a diminishing white head. Nose is not pumpkin spice per se as much as huge herbal tea, honey, chamomile, white sage. Pretty intense and demanding. Mouthfeel is nice sage, spicy herbals, nice English cask beer character- warm, medium to lighter bodied,, big herbal spice character. No really a pumpkin beer...more just a good Fall spiced beer. Nice stuff!

Hazy orange with a small white head. Nice nose, ginger, pumpkin. A little overly gingery, spices, cloves. Pretty good.

Bottle shared by Butters. Pours clear amber with an average, fizzy off-white head, medium-short retention with light lacing. Aroma is moderate pumpkin and mixed spices, earthy and farmhouse yeast, and graham cracker. Flavor is sweet malt, mixed pie spices, pumpkin, moderate malt and a sweet finish. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation.

Bottle. Deep amber color, small white edge head. Aroma of acetone, booze, spice. Taste is boozy spice. Not my cup of tea.

Sampled at the shockoe craft festival. Pours a clear Orange with decent near white head. Very nicely spiced and well balanced. Not over the top, and hits all the right pumpkin pie spice notes, and not too sweet either. But the farmhouse funk takes it too the next level. Also refined, and not too sour or tart, but lightly pleasant and makes it have a fairly dry finish on the palate. Great pumpkin beer. I’d say its even better than the jolly pumpkin one.

This was the second beer tasted at the new brewery in Richmond. This is a great story about living out your dream. The brewery is named after an Australian sheep farm. The beer had nice aroma of spices and pumpkin. These are not normally my favorite beers. The beer was sweeter than I like. The medium body beer had taste of cinnimon, nutmeg and pumpkin. I did not notice the higher alcohol. They used 100 sugar pumkins to brew this beer.
