In the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Belgium’s southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin is brewed with a blend of rye, wheat and barley, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Beyond this, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin breaks totally free of classic style guidelines. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madegascar clove and whole allspice are harmonized with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root. A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

Bottle shared by Butters. Pours clear amber with an average, fizzy off-white head, medium-short retention with light lacing. Aroma is moderate pumpkin and mixed spices, earthy and farmhouse yeast, and graham cracker. Flavor is sweet malt, mixed pie spices, pumpkin, moderate malt and a sweet finish. Sampled a few times at the brewery. Pours a hazy orange color with not much head. Tart aroma with notes of pumpkin, spice and some phenolic notes. Nutmeg comes through. The taste is lightly tart with notes of pumpkin, faint butter, stone fruits and a spicy finish. Medium bodied. Lingering spiciness but nicely balanced.

On tap at Capone’s. Poured an amber color with an averaged sized head. Pumpkins, spices, and caramel. Fine example of a pumpkin beer (but again, I prefer less spices and all pumpkin)..

750mL thanks to Butters. Pours a tepid, clear orange with a diminishing white head. Nose is not pumpkin spice per se as much as huge herbal tea, honey, chamomile, white sage. Pretty intense and demanding. Mouthfeel is nice sage, spicy herbals, nice English cask beer character- warm, medium to lighter bodied,, big herbal spice character. No really a pumpkin beer...more just a good Fall spiced beer. Nice stuff!

750 reserve from Wegman’s Collegeville. Pours hazy copper with off-white head. Nose is extremely spicy. like someone tossed some pumpkin pie with ginger and oregano. Tastes of pumpkin, spice, coriander, allspice, cardamom, and a complex finish. This one is constructed well, and very complex.

Bottle thanks to a trade. Pours a cloudy gold with a brown hue and a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of spice with a bit of sweet grain and just a hint of pumpkin. Flavor has a combination of pumpkin spice, sweet grains and a bit pumpkin.

750 ml bottle from the most recent release sent by RABinVA- thanks again, Brosmer! Pours a nice autumn orange color with a small white head that vanishes entirely after not too long. Nice balance of spices in this- clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice stand out, but none dominate. Also some sweet malts and brown sugar to mimic a pumpkin pie crust. But what I liked most here was the roasted pumpkin throughout; toasty and not too vegetal. Medium-bodied, with fairly low carbonation and a warm finish. Excellent pumpkin ale. Sorely underrated.

Bottle:   Amberish, very faint haze, moderate carbonation, thin to moderate off-white head, spotty lacing.   Definite nutmeg aroma, slight cinnamon, otherwise all-spice and a touch of clove.   Smells very much the part!   On the tongue its almost a citrusy nutmeg/cinnamon combination.   A lot of spices here, and a little difficult to pull each one out.   All-spice seems to really bring up the rear, with soft clove.   Perhaps even a touch of ginger as well.   Very spicy, but thankfully not over done.   As an 8.5% beverage, it is masked very well!   It certainly will sneak up on you, as it has done on me.   Finishes with faint ginger and clove lingering, even some citrus peel.   Smells more the part than it tastes, nutmeg/cinnamon on the nose, while the clove/ginger seem to come through on the tongue.   Comes across as very artisanal.   Well made for sure, and one that makes me wish it were fall again!
