COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Belgiumís southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin is brewed with a blend of rye, wheat and barley, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Beyond this, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin breaks totally free of classic style guidelines. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madegascar clove and whole allspice are harmonized with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root. A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

Draft - poured a clear orange color with a small white head. Aroma was more clove and some allspice than perhaps nutmeg or cinnamon. Seet ginger notes, pumpkin - mild malts - this was a pretty good and solid pumpkin brew. Very refreshing for 8.5% - liked the brew a lot.

Pumpkin, lemon, and pear nose. Clear orange, thin head. Apricot and pumpkin flavor, allspice, lemon zest finish. Mild brown sugar finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Spicing is very subtle, but the pumpkin is evident and compliments the Belgian esters quite well. Good yeast strain for this style of beer.

750 reserve from Wegmanís Collegeville. Pours hazy copper with off-white head. Nose is extremely spicy. like someone tossed some pumpkin pie with ginger and oregano. Tastes of pumpkin, spice, coriander, allspice, cardamom, and a complex finish. This one is constructed well, and very complex.

Okay offering to start a night of pumpkin ale. From a bottle. The color is the best part, burnt orange. Aroma was a little funky.

Hint of sour in the aroma. Cloudy caramel color. Pumpkin is up front with a hint of spice. A little hop at the end.

Aroma of pumpkin and spice, orange color slightly cloud with no head. Dry feel with a taste of spice. Peppery allspice finish.

Pours somewhat hazy orange amber with a smaller white creamy head. The aroma brings nice warming and tangy spice. The pumpkin flavors are kind of hollow, pun intended, but the spices are there and enjoyed, just not overly interesting. The body is nice as well.

Bottle. Right up front Iíll admit Iím not a fan of pumpkin beers. That said, this has a dizzying array of very impressive both local and international ingredients ... and itís evident in this quality beer. I just donít like it that much ... not because it isnít well made, just because I donít like pumpkin beers. If you do, this is probably one of the best youíll ever find. (#5841, 10/26/2014)

Appearance: Copper colored body that is a bit hazy. Itís transparent enough to see into the glass but not completely through it. Not much of a head...it is there when pouring but absent afterwards. Even lower than expected from a standard Farmhouse Ale. No lacing. Aroma: Cinnamon and clove with a light souring note, like a fruit going bad. Not all that pleasant of a combination. The only saving grace is that the pumpkin spice is relatively good. Taste: I get a very mellow pumpkin spice flavor (mainly just clove) and just a hint of musty barn. I donít go around licking barns but it has that old mildew quality that you can practically taste. Itís very faint, but gives credence to the farmhouse namesake. Feel: Not too dry, not really anything. Watery and not present on the palate. Overall: I would recommend passing on this one unless you have an agenda for drinking every pumpkin beer on the planet. It doesnít really do "pumpkin beer" all that well and it doesnít really do "farmhouse" all that well. Itís a very nondescript beer that leans heavily on the flavor of cloves to incite cognitive memories of pumpkin pie, which it doesnít complete in a spice selection imbalance.

On tap at Caponeís. Poured an amber color with an averaged sized head. Pumpkins, spices, and caramel. Fine example of a pumpkin beer (but again, I prefer less spices and all pumpkin)..
