In the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Belgiumís southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin is brewed with a blend of rye, wheat and barley, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Beyond this, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin breaks totally free of classic style guidelines. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madegascar clove and whole allspice are harmonized with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root. A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger. Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

Bottle: † Amberish, very faint haze, moderate carbonation, thin to moderate off-white head, spotty lacing. † Definite nutmeg aroma, slight cinnamon, otherwise all-spice and a touch of clove. † Smells very much the part! † On the tongue its almost a citrusy nutmeg/cinnamon combination. † A lot of spices here, and a little difficult to pull each one out. † All-spice seems to really bring up the rear, with soft clove. † Perhaps even a touch of ginger as well. † Very spicy, but thankfully not over done. † As an 8.5% beverage, it is masked very well! † It certainly will sneak up on you, as it has done on me. † Finishes with faint ginger and clove lingering, even some citrus peel. † Smells more the part than it tastes, nutmeg/cinnamon on the nose, while the clove/ginger seem to come through on the tongue. † Comes across as very artisanal. † Well made for sure, and one that makes me wish it were fall again!

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2016 Draft at Khyber Pass. Hazy pumpkin orange pour with a slim amount of off-white foam. Modestly funky brew with a good amount of pumpkin spice. Sweet and spicy. Earthy but clean. Pumpkin squash. Raw sugarcane. Allspice. Anise. Ginger. Cinnamon. Nutmeg. Clove. The rye adds a nice element. Betters most pumpkin brews this time of year but still not really feeling it.

$10.29 bomber from Kroger - marked on sale $8.99, but of course it didnít ring up. Popping this to watch Mascots! Pours orange with an inch of cream-colored head. Aroma of cinnamon, actual pumpkin, clove. Flavor is lightly sweet without being sickening: vanilla, cinnamon, pumpkin, nutmeg, clove. Quite tasty!

It has aromas of pumpkin, fruity esters, cherry, and slight earthly elements. There is a complex combination of the fruity esters and the pumpkin that creates a sweet finish. There are also hints of nutmeg and brown sugar.

Sampled with Matt. JT and Mike. Body seemed a little thin, but overall, the brew was decent. Nice notes of nutmeg, pumpkin, rye with a splash of bourbon.

Bright orange, mild haze, small off-white head. Sweet pumpkin, light spice, malty aroma. A touch of cinnamon, nutmeg. Medium bodied, subtle alcohol presence. Decent in small doses.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is very hot, with earthy notes, pumpkin spice, and alcohol. Flavour is along the same lines, with alcohol, pumpkin spices, and earth. Pretty hot and the notes donít really work together. Meh.

Bottle - Lots of spice and a bit of perfume. Clear gold with a thin white head. Tons of clove and really way too much spice. Not good.

The rye gives this beer a nice mellow flavor -- itís not too spicy and not too sweet, and it definitely doesnít taste as processed or artificial as many beers of its kind. Finishes a little slick and evaporates at the end, but otherwise has a nice malty character. Balanced for a pumpkin ale.

Smells like pumpkin spices and minerals. Taste is the same. Medium body, medium carbonation, and some foam.
