COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed with baby ginger from Casselmonte Farm and wildflower honey from Bearer Farms, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout captures the terroir of central Virginia in a rich, creamy libation with a velvety mouthfeel and an intriguing evolution of flavors from milk chocolate and vanilla to honeycomb and cinnamon to a snap of ginger in the finish. Deep, dark chocolate in color with a mahogany tint and a frothy, caramel colored head, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout offers aromatics of holiday spice originating from the ginger, and balanced with a generous dose of whole Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans and Vietnamese cinnamon. Milk sugar (lactose) contributes to the full body of this stout and tames its roasty character, while oats lend a silky quality. Enjoy fresh, or cellar for a special occasion. We hope Hardywood Gingerbread Stout contributes to your merriment this season.

Received in a trade with a generous BA. Beer has piqued my interest for awhile, I’m really happy to be finally giving this a try. Pours a pitch black in color with some brown hues around the edge of the glass. Nose is gingerbread, cinnamon, nutmeg, and all spice. Normally I think the nose would be taken over with spices in this beer, but the gingerbread is holding strong. It’s prominent and pleasant. Taste is dry gingerbread, it’s not overpowering, but it’s gentle and pleasant. There is the aforementioned spice and chocolate and just a little coffee. Moderate mouthfeel, light to moderate carbonation, and a long finish. This is exactly what I was hoping for. When I heard the description, I didn’t think it would live up to the flavor, but it surpassed my expectations. This would be an excellent holiday sipper at thanksgiving or Christmas.

Bottle in line for Blåbær ’15. Blackish pour with a tan head. Notes of ginger, cloves, cinnamon and chocolate. A bit weak.

How: Bottle (750 ml) at tasting. From Frank, thanks!

>>> A surprisingly thin but otherwise decent spicy stout.

+ Spices, despite being the dominant flavor, aren’t offensive and are rather well integrated
The body was light to medium and combined with a rather weak mouthfeel, the result is that the beer felt really thin for the style
There was an unpleasant acidity in the taste
Not much depth or complexity
The bourbon barrel-aged version, although not stellar, was much better

Flavors: Ginger, roasted malts, cinnamon, lactic notes

Bottle. Thanks Tim. Aroma is full on, lots of ginger, pfeffernusse, creamy. Taste is full on too, rich, sweet, gingerbread, spice, coats the mouth. Creamy, vanilla. Dark fruit. Nutty. And nutty. (?)

Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue and a small off-white rim that leaves good lacing. Nose is of grapes and bourbon. Taste is of spices, chocolate, grapes. Moderately sweet. Body is full and carbonation soft. Overall a pretty tasty stout, not too ginger-forward in comparison to the BA version but still interesting enough.

Pours dark, bit if beige head. Aroma is thick gingerbread, loads of it, sweet and full of cookies. Taste is sort of what it smells. Loads of ginger, cookies and Christmas flavours. Also reminds me some pumpkin beers, probably because of all those spices. Nice dessert beer. Not really a beer I’d like to have a full pint of but a small glass feels nice.

Over the top aroma, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, wood, soy sauce, butterscotch, eggnog, chocolate, rum spice, light booze. Very over the top and artificial tasting. Lightly boozy, extremely thin, not very stout like.
