Growler fill at the brewery. Pours black, dark brown at edges, nice head, held up quite well considering from a growler. Aroma is chocolate, faint coffee roast, and a baked ginger character. Flavor is interesting - the chocolate and ginger come together and form a flavor that is remarkably like toasted coconut. In fact, one is left with the distinct impression of a liquid Almond Joy, if Almond Joy’s were made with good chocolate. Chocolate liquor on the finish. Roasty, but not at all acrid. Very enjoyable, definitely a sipper.

Bottle. Shared this one with a buddy who brought it down from Richmond. First off, this was one of the best beer we sampled that weekend and it was up against some big boys. Pours black/brown with a nice tan head that had some staying power. Aroma is baked gingerbread, some chocolate, slight roast. Flavor was spot on gingerbread cookie, ginger, spice, bread crust, chocolate, roasted coffee. Full body. Very impressive. I thought the 9% didn’t really peek its head out.

Smells and tastes exactly like Gingerbread. Down to the taste of the icing on the cookie. Very sweet but hard to tell at first. Delicious, but I wouldn’t want to drink much more than 8oz or so.

tasting on 3/24/12. brown / black pour with a small tan head. HUGE gingerbread / cinnamon nose - overpowering and dominating, but unique. med body - very sweet with tons of ginger. Light spice finish with more gingerbread cookies. Interesting beer - but I would not want anything more than a sample.

This beer is delicious! The aroma is exactly like a gingerbread cookie and so is the taste. Rich and creamy with light tan fluffy head and a pleasant finish, the 9% ABV is completely hidden with no alcohol presence at all. My favorite beer from Hardywood so far! Can’t wait to taste the bottles I have aging in a year from now! Keep up the good work Hardywood!

Molasses, pie crust, and ginger aroma, light cinnamon notes underneath. Cola brown headless. Burned pie crust dominated flavor, Ginger at midpalate. Significant amounts of char. Alcohol not noticeable. Wanting in sweetness and less char.

I’ve been putting off rating this beer for a while now, but having just tasted my third or fourth sample, I can’t hold back. This beer is absolutely amazing. Extremely dark brown pour with ring of solid brown head. Wonderful subtley gingerbread and cinnamon aroma. Flavor is great dark cocoa and roast and vanilla and graham cracker. It is a little sweet for my personal taste, and couldn’t drink more than a glass or two, but I’m also very interesting to see how this develops over time. Big viscous chewy body and pleasant alcohol warming on the tail. This is a truly creative and very well executed brew. I’m REALLY impressed by this.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2012 This is the first stouts from the Richmond brewer purchased in a 22oz bottle. I have beeen looking forward to this stout and I wasn’t disappoined. The dark stout poured an ink black with a tannish head that laced down the glass. The stout has a balanced ginger aroma and tatse. It is like "red hots" in your first sips. This is a full body stout with an average carbonation. The roasted malts are detected in your aftertaste. This is a unique stout is worth the money. Hardywood is setting a very high standard. Visted the brewery on Thursday. Tasted the other stout. Very exciting.

Tap. Dark with thin tan head. Light aroma of roastiness, chocolate, and gingerbread cookies. Plus a hint of liqueur. Tastes like gingerbread cookies too, but not the overly sweet ones! Yay Richmond!
