Our quest to brew the quintessential coffee beer began over a cupping with the coffee gurus from Richmondís Lamplighter Roasting Company. Their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee was masterfully roasted to highlight the single origin beanís bright, crisp body and distinctive blueberry undertones, making it harmonize beautifully with our Russian Imperial Stout. May this beer warm your spirits in these brisk winter months.

Bottle. Appearance: Black pour with ruby edges and a two finger fluffy khaki head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma: Deep roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, some molasses and nuttiness. Taste: big nutty roasted maltiness all the way thru, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, some dark dried fruits, ends coffee bitter dry and molasses sweet. Mouthfeel: medium to full body with medium carbonation. Overall: pretty solid. Wish it were a little thicker and I've had other stouts (not brewed WITH coffee) where coffee flavor was even more pronounced. I think some good barrel aging could do wonders with this. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle poured into snifter. Aroma of bitter roast coffee and the faintest hint of fruit. Taste is roast coffee and stale coffee. Bit of a bitter oxidized flavor as it warms.

Good coffee stout. Not too strong on the coffee, but nice subtle blend. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. 2014 vintage. Pours a pitch black with three fingers of mocha foam. Nose is sweet and bitter coffee and roasted malts. Taste is rich coffee with a bit too much bitterness on the end. Roasty and smooth with dry chocolate. Creamy mouth feel. Overall this is a really solid beer.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a large, microfoamed light brown head, about three centimetres tall. All with virtually no light getting through at an angle - about 99% opaque - I canít imagine this looking any better. Aroma of earth, hops, alcohol, prunes, metal, vanilla, medicine and a hint of coffee - not much though. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep assertive roasted malt at first with a noticeable hit of bourbon and oak with some nice sugars behind and showing some depth, all with a bit of coffee bitterness at the end. Aftertaste shows a silky malt, some rich coffee flavours and a lot of still pungent sweetness which dominates the finish, along with alcohol. Overall, a beer that is still working out and I wish I left it for another year, but this makes me feel good about aging their other beers. A good beer for sure with a nice profile and great complexity - very nice to sample! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Tysonís Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 28-January-2014 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on a day of more snow, 03-March-2014.

Location/Date:Bottle split with Dave and Harris on 2/07/2014.

Appearance: Pour s a dark brown black.
Aroma: Aroma mostly of coffee.
Taste: Coffee, faint chocolate.
Palate:Medium body, light coffee aftertaste.

Summary: I enjoyed this one, second stout Iíve had from Hardywood and so far they havenít disappointed. Not as coffee leaning as say Bellís Java Stout(which I love), which may make it a better choice for some.

1/21/2014. 750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Black with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas with chocolate and coffee. The coffee flavors are a bit muted for my taste, and the mouthfeel a tad thin, but overall a nice stout that I would drink again.

750 mL bottle (2014) poured into a snifter. Pours dark brown/black with brown hues with 1/2 to 1 finger tan head. Coffee with chocolate and light berries in the aroma. Notes of coffee, roast, milk/dark chocolate, and light berries in the taste. Body is a bit light for a Russian Imperial Stout.

750 ml bottle from RABinVA- thanks, RAB! Pours a deep, opaque brown with a small dark tan head. Lots of sweet, chocolaty notes- brownie, cake, chocolate syrup, fudge- coffee, earth, and tobacco. Medium-full bodied, with a sweet, chewy mouthfeel that finishes roasty. Moderate carbonation. The sweetness is more forward than the coffee. Good, but a little disappointing.
